About

Inquiring minds, welcome to the new beta version of Portagame 2.0.

Yes, we’ve 2.0′zized our site.

Portagame started as a mere hobby project of Jason Murphy back in 2004, when rumors of a dual-screen, touchpad handheld being produced by Nintendo was being dismissed by industry pundits everywhere. Now, four years later, the Nintendo DS has taken the handheld market by storm - besting even its own sibling, the Gameboy Advance.

But that’s not to say that Nintendo hasn’t had its share of competition. Sony released the Sony PSP during the same year. This thing could play Playstation quality games on a widescreen format, play media (including the cult-favorite pre-recorded UMD format), and even be used as a VoIP phone! The future remains bright for this little giant.

Then, three years later in 2007, Apple decided that it needs a larger piece of the mobile entertainment market. With the release of the iPhone and the iPod Touch, they gave us just a taste of what was to come. In 2008 they released a developers studio and the iPhone 3G, a device with enough power that got the attention of large developers. Phone, media, and gaming are going to keep the iPhone a high-demand product for a long time.

The major players of the future handheld gaming wars are building up their armies now. Portagamers around the world won’t forget the devices that were ahead of their time (or failed due to poor marketing and/or management): Nokia N-Gage (the Taco and QD), Gizmondo, and Tapwave Zodiac all have a special place in our hearts. Without these innovative devices attempting to bring new technologies to the handheld gaming front, we’re positive that we wouldn’t see GPS, touch, mobile network gaming, download services, and other features that we have today. R.I.P. mobile gadgets that could. You are missed.

The future remains truly bright for mobile gaming enthusiasts. It doesn’t matter if you are a hardcore handheld gamer, or a casual mobile game player, chances are you’ll mostly likely find a game in your pocket at any given time. And this, dear reader, has been the reality that Portagame.com has always dreamed of. Handheld gaming has always meant accessible gaming, and each passing day defines “accessibility” in new and exciting ways.
