FlipStart Updated?

Gizmodo pointed us to a recent review that was the result of FlipStartPC HQ’s persistent contact with Pamela Metivier, who we’re guessing is a PR person over at Vulcan Inc.
The round-up:
LID module optional but you can upgrade later; LID mail feature only compatible with Outlook so far (go figure, seeing this is a product from Paul Allen); Linux can be installed if you support it yourself; and…
my informant at Vulcan tells me that January is the earliest it may ship but there’s no offical release date yet, with a more realistic date being Q2 2005, which is quite dissapointing and could have serious implications if the internal components aren’t changed to reflect expectations, ie, the TM5800 / 256mb RAM / 30gb HD may seem quite dated by that time. Perhaps by enabling the motherboard with the capacity for an Efficeon processor, Vulcan is planning ahead, and indeed, I’m being told that it’s not yet decided which process will be chosen initially, but to at least expect FlipStart to at one point use the Efficeon. Similarly, according to the above Mobile Showcase 2k4 article, there is already talk of an updated device with 3 hours of battery life instead of 2.
Vaporware? Too early to say. But when a company has to re-evaluate specs because product will be shipping later than planned, that is never a good sign. Right oQo?
Nevertheless, we are still excited for the potential uses from the FlipStart and having WiFi in your pocket. And with Paul Allen’s backing, it’s very likely that the FlipStart will be around awhile.
