Gretzky Kicks Off Canadian PSP Launch
We had Danger Mouse and Carson Daly. But Canada had Wayne Gretzky doing their PSP launch parties.
Who wins? According to Matt, we do. I kinda (sorta, it’s a passive-aggressive thing) disagree. Gretzky is targeted more towards an adult audience. Carson Daly still gets hoarded by MTV teenies. Ok, so this isn’t that big of a deal. We just wanted a reason to post a pic of Gretzky on our site to honor and/or jest cream.soda.

I picked up my PSP, along with Wipeout Pure. I will get Twisted Metal later. Already setup the internet connection. Man is this thing awesome! I was lazy, and didn’t preorder. I went into EBGames, and their was a line of about 8 people. I asked the guy if they were only selling to preorders. He said yes, so I went next door to Target, and they were 20 PSP’s there. I picked one up, and was out in two minutes. All I can say is, this thing is awesome. The unit is more durable than I thought, and that screen is amazing.
HAHAHA you guys in the U.S. have all these people lining up for PSPs… I went to Best Buy this afternoon (around 5:00 pm) and they had an entire cage of PSPs (about 50) on sale. There was no line.
Canadians, you are in luck. Apparently their flyer was a bit misleading, so I assumed they would force you to buy the PSP with the hockey game mentioned previously. They are selling the PSP Value Pack as a standalone, for 300 (cdn). So… I’ll be picking one up A.S.A.P.
Dangit, I wish I could afford to get the PSP today, I see them all around campus and It just makes me want it more and more. Sucks being on a college shoestring budget, buying a PSP would me not eating for almost a month.
Hey guys, how exactly do you become a member? It been a question I’ve been meaning to ask for a while now.
thank god for that…i didn’t have to buy and hockey game for my psp!
anyway im trying to find a good conversion software for the psp so does anyone have any suggestions please?
Egger, repeat with me the magic word… ‘google’.
“Initial problems with the system voiced by gamers that purchased the Japanese version of the PSP have been fixed. A small number of gamers found air bubbles or dead pixels on their PSP screens when they opened up their units. That problem has been rectified according to SCEA officials we spoke with. Another flaw of the system came when you apply a twisting pressure when you hold the unit. The UMD door clasp released and would open unexpectedly. That issue has also been fixed.” - sympatico.msn.ca PSP article
brilliant, and sad. I wanted a projectile-launching PSP…
BTW has anyone noticed on the right and top sometimes a text-based ad says “PSP - 599.99, not yet available in the states”????
ohh believe me, i’ve tried google and its a big sea of crap, alot of articles and product lines but really not that much software. are you aware of any psp software sony will be releasing soon?
oh and i have a dead pixel on my psp screen but i bought the warranty for 30$ cuz i just knew something was gunna happen, but other than that its the most amazing little gizmo i’ve ever held in my own two hands!
question: during multiplayer gaming on the psp, do you think that each player needs the same UMD game disk in order to play? or does only one player need the disk and you can link up with all of your friends?
like, if im playing wipeout pure and im the only one with the game, we should be able to play multiplayer regardless. that would be great, i hope that can happen
Only on select games -read only that Atari anthology currently- can you play multi-player with just one UMD. If you own WipeOut Pure, BOTH players must own a copy to play.
If you wanted multi-player with only one game on more than just an Atari Anthology… PSP is the wrong system to buy for that.
But eh, games aren’t THAT expensive. If you really need it, go buy another copy of WipeOut Pure! It’s not like you can just buy one copy of -say- Bomberman and play with EIGHT people off of just one copy of the game. Heh. Well, not on the PSP anyways.
Ya, more will game sharing will come to the PSP, and developers are just learning how to use it. They don’t have practice with it liked they did with the DS and GBA. The PSP is awesome, I’m loving the thing. Hopefully we get a firmware update to add a web browser and such.
bash - a thought just came to me. When Sony released minidisks, were they R/W at first, or were they pre-loaded with music. Seems they were preloaded at first before sony made recordable disks. But that was a while, and perhaps all this PSP hype is erasing tracks from my memory.
bash - web browser is supposedly coming down the pipe as well (according to that update leak if I remember correctly). If they can manage to make umd burners cheap, and I mean cheap as in under 60 bucks it would be a viable concept to release. But it “could happen” being that sony has released the format so that other companies could make things for it. I believe sony should do whatever it takes to make the format as sucessfull as possible.
Ahh pish posh. could somebody explain to me why we need a umd burner in the first place? i mean wouldnt you rather pay a flat, one time price for a 1gb memory stick instead of waiting for a umd burner that will probably never happen and will cost mega bucks because beeing realistic it would cost at least 100 dollars, then theres the disks and the long wait and maybe other complications. the psp is designed to have all of your media on memory sticks and you needn’t store everything on disks or sticks when you can put your media stuff on the computer and add it to the stick in no more than 10 seconds and your out the door. i would personally never want to carry around or have in the first place 20 umd disks lying around.
on another note, i just listened to music for the first time on my psp and it is…(im forced to make up a word) scrumtrulescent! which means very good. and the battery life is more then people expected; i watched spider man 2 twice, showed off with the demo disk to people alot, set up the internet connection, listened to about music for about a half hour and then it conked out so im fine with it:)
ps: cant wait for the internet browser, thats DEFINITELY going to happen. i hooked the psp up to my wireless router fast and easy and its only a matter of time before we surf the net on the psp. if a plam pilot can do it, this thing sure can
I’m not going to wait around begging sony for a UMD burner - it won’t happen until a couple of years down the road, if it does happen at all. I think that a couple memory stick duos will be enough for me. As for movies, I don’t plan on downloading them and watching them on my PSP - that’s what my home theatre is for. Are you really going to sit for 2 whole hours in your everyday commute to watch an entire film? I’m not.
Egger, I’m surprised you managed to play SM2 twice and all that stuff. Makes me want that new battery even more… so I can watch LOTR… once.
BTW for internet surfing: Since the PSP doesn’t have a touch screen, you’ll probably have to buy a mini-keyboard and mini-mouse to surf wirelessly… As for the mini-mouse: people might say, “why not just use the analog nub?”
First of all, the analog nub is on the left side of the PSP, and most people use their mouse with their right hand (I’m left-handed and I use my mouse on my right side…) Second of all, it would be impractical to use the nub because you’d have to reach over the keyboard and fiddle with it whenever you want to use the cursor (try to visualize a PSP stuck pda-style to a folding keyboard. Get what I mean?) you could knock over or topple your PSP from the stand or something. Third, a mouse is simply more precise. Try playing CS well with a joystick instead of a mouse.
However, all this added stuff makes the overall setup too much to carry for a handheld - you’re better off with a slim laptop. As for projected keyboards, they suck (look it up on cnet.com, they have a review).
Anyone have ideas to make the PSP a practical surfer of the net?
okay i dont think you need a mouse just to surf the internet. the d-pad will be enough to cruise up and down, side to side on a web page. as for the keyboard i just hope it isnt designed for it to sit on top of the psp where the usb connection is, i dont want to be reaching over the screen just to type something, but i guess sony could make it work somehow.
well i saw sm2 about 1 1/2 times before the battery died (with the exeption of everythin else i did)so its a good battery life. i only plan to watch tv shows i’ve recorded on my psp, like 24 and stuff then watch them when i have the time. so do you think a 512mb stick would be good for storing about 2 hours of tv shows and some other stuff?
you can get online with wipeout pure….ane no get a bigger memory if you want to put tv shows on there also get psp video 9 to convert it to mp4 format
Can anyone please tell me the real Canadian Prices for the PSP!! Some people are telling me that it is $600 for the value pack!!! Please e-mail me!! ^.^
hey budies wuts up, im brand spanking new here like this is my first post here send me an email its
knomegrown666@hotmail.com heh.
so i read the psp post and i like what i hear, im scrambling to get money to buy it im in canada heh.
anyone know whats the better deal the psp itself or the value pack?
and how mutch are they?
“Third, a mouse is simply more precise.”
Have you ever played a FPS on a console? People who havent are always the first to bash it. A mouse is more accurate, but in console FPS they make the aiming system a little easier for the player. I think that there won’t be a problem with using the analog nub for FPS or for internet. If you like the nub to be on the other side, then write a program to vertically flip the screen, and then turn the psp upside down. there you go.
hey uhh does anyone know if the psp has a gps (global positioning signal)?
if so, is it included or will it come in a firm ware update? tried to find it on sony website it didnt say
then i went on google and it was just crap after crap after crap.
oh and ik -47 wat games does FPS stand for? l8tr.
^^ The GPS system will be released in the summer. I will surely buy one. There is no GPS hardware in the psp, thus the GPS pack will be a hardware addon. The only way for this to work is for it to attack to the top, and connect through the USB port.
and FPS = First Person Shooter. And I just want to mention that I was wrong about PSP being goof for FPS. Sony should have made the analogue nub on the RIGHT side. not the wrong.
thats good info…..
uhh could you make a list of what kinda stuff is gunna be put on the psp, like it can print pictures when usb is conected, i hope you know what i mean, i have a dirt bike so a GPS will be awsome with trails and what not, i might make up a hokey little mounter. So my psp is mounted on my handle-bars.
ik-47 whats your email. we can msn.
l8tr..
Hey!
I have a good question! If I had a good deal on a PSP single bundle, but would like to have the hockey game, where could I get it ?
I havent seen the game sold separatly!! WTF, dont tell me sony wont sell it.
Does anyone know ?
I got mine from EB games and yes, they will give you the game separately if you ask. Bestbuy, future shop doesnt matter. they sell the games in different cases including the hockey one so im sure if you go to the store that sells it and ask to have whatever separate, they’ll give it to you. after all, it is expensive, they do want your money right?
how do u play music on ur psp. Do u download it from the net but how do u transfer it to ur psp. also how do u put tv shows on it. plz tell me. thx
To put music on it connect your PSP with a USB cord (Anyone that fits), open up “My Computer”, then look for your connected PSP (It should be close to your C drive, look for an E or G drive. Then click that, open up the PSP file, and put your mp3’s in your music folder in there. Look for some guides on the net at 1up.com and ign.com. I am writing my own very extensive one for dapreview.net, but that won’t be finished soon, as it is going to be quite detailed and include reviews.
i have the same problem when i upload the songs onto the psp it says like 20 kb left so its taken some off but the song isnt there can you help me please?

I’ve been jested. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against hockey or the great Wayne Gretzky in any way, it’s just that I don’t play (and so many other people I know) hockey games (I still watch it sometimes).
Of course, there are lots of hockey fans out there who would love this bundle made by Future Shop and Best Buy, but I discovered after doing more research most other stores aren’t bundling Gretzky NHL with the PSP and just selling the Value Pack as it is for 300 Cdn. Sears, Wal-Mart, Toys ‘R’ Us and so many other stores not specializing in consumer electronics are selling the PSP, apparently. So if you want a PSP and didn’t pre-order, you may still be in luck.
If there was only one game I could get for the PSP it would be GT4, even though I already have it for PS2. I wonder if you could connect the PS2 to an ethernet+wireless hub and play against the PSP… That way my friends can simply bring their PSPs over to my place and we can play against a PS2. Lol I’m not making much of a point, am I? Summarizing: PSP-PS2 Connectivity. There. My point.
