Nintendo DS = $149.99 on November 21st, 2004.

Nintendo DS Final Design

Sorry for the lack of a fancy picture, but expedience is of the essence in this case. Nintendo just recently updated their website with the following information.

“Nintendo’s newest innovation, Nintendo DS, will make its worldwide debut in North American stores on Nov. 21, and then in Japan on Dec. 2. It will sell at an MSRP of $149.99, making it an immediate mass-market attraction.”

It appears that we will get the Nintendo DS as cheap as dirt in the United States AND we will get it BEFORE Japan. This may be the first time the United States has gotten a Nintendo device before Japan. The best part of the news release is coming up though.

“Consumers immediately will be able to pick up and play the new system, as it comes with a free software feature, PictoChat, embedded in the system hardware. PictoChat allows DS owners to write messages with an on-screen keyboard or the stylus and send them wirelessly to other DS users nearby. Users can text chat, draw artistic messages or share secrets, all without saying a word.”

However, there is some bad news for those who were expecting the Nintendo DS to be a replacement for the Game Boy Advance SP.

“In effect, Nintendo DS already boasts a library of more than 550 games because it is compatible with single-player modes of games made for the world?s best-selling video game system, Game Boy Advance SP.”

So, it can play ONLY Game Boy Advance games and can not use the link cable capabilities of the Game Boy Advance games. So, do not expect to hang up your GBA SP anytime soon. Nintendo also did not mention what first party games Nintendo would be releasing. Just needed to get that out to you, our readers, as soon as possible. Enjoy!

dmgice - I owe you my soul. Nice scoop and great post.

And we get the DS one week before Japan? So unlike Nintendo, not that I’m complaining.

GIMME HUMGAWA

Sexy beast, ain’t it? I stayed awake to go to a midnight Star Wars DVD party.. and GASP! Late news finds me. Good day for me actually, they sent me home early from work because I finished up everything I had to do too quickly. Tommorrow, I shall go back to taking 45 minute coffee breaks every half hour. However, Star Wars on DVD, DS sexiness, and a redesigned and cheaper PS2. Not too shabby, considering the Kansas City Star horoscope said I’m having a 2 star day. November is going to rock heavily. I shall finally get a PS2 and I shall also get my hands upon the Nintendo DS. ^_^ Oh, yes. All is well. Now onward to October 7th and the announcement of DS launch titles! (Unless those get leaked early on. He he he)

Nice. Now someone go send this off to Slashdot, Engadget and Gizmodo. Let’s get ourselves some damn attention!

Most sites are covering the news already. Some found via us, some saw the PRs. Either way, news like this is already spreading. The washington post even got tabs on us (via our Gizmodo pals)

I was up late too, saw the Press Releases and went to post - but houndawg dmgice was already on it–kudos for jumping on it! I’m thinking of moving to the west coast when the relases will come during more normal hours (like midnight). Howwwl!

So there is no information on NDS lounch date in EUROPE? Can EU expect it at the same time as Japan or will it have to wai tlike usual?

No, sorry, no UK info as of yet. And that has got to suck. We’d do our best guestimation of the unit being available before Christmas, but Nintendo holds out on eurogamers for some reason.

I’d say get the Lik-Sang preorder and not put up with such prejudice BS.

Nintendo DS is not compatible with GB/GBC cartridges but you CAN play GB game and GBC roms on the NDS - using emulator and one of the GBA Flash Cards —

These gameboy linkers and card will not play Nintendo DS roms and you can’t backup NDS Roms using GBA Backup device but you can play Gameboy Advance Roms on DS as well as emulate GB, GBC, NES, SNES, PC Engine, Z80, SEGA Game Gear and Master System roms etc.
