Nintendo DS: P2P Network, or GPS? You Decide.

dsboy

Quick, go to Engadget, something is brewing in the lull. Rumours of a client-to-client-to-client adhoc network amongst friends and strangers alike. Perhaps, it’s GPS. Perhaps, it’s mobile carrier compatibility. Arrrgh, the drama is starting to kill me.

An adhoc, client-to-client, P2P network would pwn3d and sux0rs at the same time. You are downtown, you see John and Frank appear on your radar. You are connected to Frank only and directly through John. John’s busy and loves his PictoChat too much, but Frank is up for a challenge. You start a game and it’s on! Best gaming challenge you’ve had in a long time. Next thing you know, your screen says “connection dropped” and neither you or Frank moved. John, however did. Even though he wasn’t playing in your game, he was still crucial in linking you to Frank. His bus came, he got on, and you’re left not knowing who’d the better gamer be.

Ok, so the above situation might be a litte stretched. Realisticly, a network such as this would server very useful should you ever play a multiplayer game wirelessly with 3 or more players, perhaps this killer app would make it just one step easier to discover all players on the network and keep everyone from having to sit in a big-group-hug type of circle. What I’m saying is a one-to-one peer network, not many-to-many. All players will not need to be seen by your own wifi transmitter in order for your unit to recognize them as part of the network. Makes sense?

This is the current speculations. However, all those rumors could also lead to a Gizmondo killing GPS network. Or, and perhaps more spectacular, an N-Gage killing GPRS network. Oh mercy me, when will they mayhem cease? Keep your ears out for that mid-october press conference. It’s going to be huge.
