OQO Profiled in News.com Video

OQOThe OQO UltraPC makes an appearance in recent news clip from News.com. The video features Jonathan Betts-LaCroix, OQO’s CTO, being intervied by David Berlind from ZDnet. He mentions specs, drop tests, release dates and pricing (approx.), and pulls the battery pack off to show how thin it is. Worth the three minute clip and very work appropriate. Very.

Thank you very much Jason, this is really interesting.

A couple of thoughts :

Sure it’s gorgeous as hell and i soo want one but … come on, what’s its main purpose ? You can’t use it as a desktop replacement. You need at least another pc to send some datas throught wireless connection. Although I may hope that the docking station will have several usb2 ports so… mmmh yeah, if it’s the case you can plug an external dvd/cd rom drive and voila.

Well, assuming i’m right, inspect the keyboard : you nearly can’t use it. It’s like the pda’s little keyboards, it works but it’s way too small (due to it’s micro size) to be really usable. So once again, i see that as a personnal viewer. A nice way to surf the web (damn, what a nice screen !), check your latests mails (i don’t see myself writing such a long comment on this kind of device, but i thing you get it earlier), review your latests powerpoint presentations, or excel spreadsheets, listen to some mp3 or watch a movie… Mmmh all of this can nearly be done using a pda (one with a built-in vga screen i mean)So once again, what’s kind of users will buy it ?
As i said earlier, i really want one, not simply because it’s “wow, that’s what i call a useful gadget” but because it can be plugged to a nice big tft screen and a keyboard. In this case, it becomes a nice light desktop, that transforms itself into a nice “viewer” with loads of possibilities when it is used in mobile mode but i don’t think it will be advertised like this.
It’s hard to explain my feeling, IMHO i think the device is wrongly advertised. You won’t use it to write anything so you’ll strongly need the docking station with an external keyboard / monitor otherwise it’s kinda useless and can’t be stated as a laptop replacement…
In other words, why selling it with a label “well it could be attached to an external keyboard / monitor” while it must be “well it has to be attached to an external keyboard / monitor and used as a viewer with limited input possibilites while unplugged from its docking station” ?
Maybe i didn’t get the point ? What’s your opinion ? Why will you want to buy one ? What do you expect from this jewel ?

I want one because I can pack it up with my 19″ and a full keyboard and have a full PC in my hotel room.

Joking aside, I do want one. It’s nice to have something that can run all my office/work related apps that a PDA can’t. Currently, I tote a huge (by weight, not size) laptop to and from work so I can take my projects with me. An OQO and a docking station at both sites would be a much easier reality. Now if only I can convince my bosses to pay the “under $2000″ for one.
