PSP Dead Pixel problem fixed
SO many people were worried about the Dead Pixel problem on PSP,
Well now Sony have offered to fix the problem.
Sony says if your PSP has a couple of dead pixels to send it back to them to be fixed for free at only the expense of the shipping charge.
So it seems that the pixel problem was just a minor hitch for the PSP launch.
One less thing for DS fanboys to argue against.

Wow,
Thats really bad to hear..
You wouldnt expect something like that to happen.
Guess it happened on the way back.
Yeah. Never buy a HP…
They won’t even cover the shipping costs? Rip off. Even Dell shipped me a brand new AC Adapter overnight for free. All that was required of me was to put the faulty part in the same box it came in, tape it back up, call the local number for DHL pick up, and they were at my door some four hours later. Didn’t cost me a penny and it was quick and practically painless… painful part was being on hold for 45 minutes before talking to a human.
Sony’s computers are overpriced, too.
Everyone has their own opinion on who has the best customer service and computers. I like HP, and I’ve heard a lot about crappy Dell service and tech support. Everyone has their own sucess stories, other people have uh… failure stories.
I had the same problem with my iPod, too. It broke (don’t ask any more than that) and Apple sent a foam-insulated box within a week of the phone call and I put my dead iPod in there, the postman picked it up, and a week later I had a new iPod sitting on my doorstep (not literally. they reqd a signature). My headphones had problems too. My first pair lost all the bass in one side, Apple sent me a pair of in-ears by mistake. They didn’t ask for it back, then sent the headphones that come with the iPod. That pair crackled loudly whenever I went to 80 percent or more volume, so they sent me another pair.
Apple must make a ton of money on iPods or else they wouldn’t so lax about handing new iPods to people with broken ones…
See, a lot of people might not have that kind of story - they might think Apple has crap service, but for all I care, Apple is a company I think is worth going back to.
Same for Sony. Even though I know that they won’t offer the same level of service as I had with Apple, I *hope* that they can be at the least, reasonable with defective products.
Oh yeah. boots haven’t you seen my arguement as to why the PSP is actually UNDERPRICED, for all the tech inside it? Look back in the comments in the archives in the PSP section, if you have the time to waste.
The took the route most companies in their position take (including Apple for batteries, Microsoft for those damned cords) you always go the way of the costumer. You’re in for a world of hurt if you don’t.
i think that sony is trying to take a better stand behind their product for once, as they believe that the PSP will be reliable and taking the DS as uh… worthy competition. As for people who get their PSP and break it, I laugh. I’ve heard of little 8 yr olds who have spoiled parents and got the PSP on the first day, then broke it. LOL.
So, what is Sony going to do with all of their other LCD customers (Vaio, etc) when they have dead pixels? Sony has been snubbing those LCD customers for years.
kinda out of the subject but on game spot i saw the ps3 i dont know if its real but it did to me also it had a umd slot wich made sense for the ps3
there are less pixels on a PSP lcd, thus the likeliness of having dead pixels are a little less than on a full laptop lcd.
PSP - 480×272 pixels.
Average Laptop - 1280×768 pixels.
Come to think of it, omega, I think that it’s entirely possible and very probable that there will be some sort of UMD reader or even writer on the PS3.
Remember that UMD stands for UNIVERSAL media disc, not PSP media disc. There is a strong probability that the UMD will make its way into other future Sony products, starting with the PS3.
If you read the rest of the Rumour Control article on gamespot, they said it [the ps3 mockup] was bogus. There would obviously be a better logo than that… and I expect Sony to come up with a design better than that. It seems that the PS3 mockup puts too much emphasis on the UMD slot than the Blu-Ray slot, and doesn’t really make sense since most of your games for the PS3 most definitely be on small 1.8 GB discs. GT3 was around 3 gigs, GTA:SA is around 4, and same with GT4. If PS2 games are already that size, then following that logic won’t the PS3 have at least 4 gigs of data in their games (early PS2 games used CD-ROM, so new PS3 games won’t use that much space until later, starting with DVDs)?
Wow, that is hardly customer service! Nintendo provided a much better solution for the DS. They would take your Credit Card info and then send you a brand NEW DS with a prepaid shipping package to return your defective DS in. Sony is a bunch of hacks, who wouldn’t know quality or customers service if it bit them in the butt! The fact that a $250 item would have this many problems at launch is a joke, and yes I got one of the defective units, and many stores are not allowing returns.
cheep ol’ Sony stiffs us again, my DS has one dead pixel, my psp has…1..2..3…4…5…6 ok 6 dead pixels. I don’t wanna pay the shipping chargers, but honestly if the screen isn’t COMPLETELY black I can’t tell.
Well, I bought mine and had to ship it off to Sony the next day which was Tuesday because I had 2 dead pixels in the middle. They were bright white and I just couldn’t take my eyes off of them during moements of dark displayed areas. It’s now friday and there is still no status for it listed after checking. I’m wanting to play it so bad now I almost wish I kept it. Knowing me though I would still complain and wish I had it fixed. it is very dissapointing that the pixel problem is there and some of us have to wait for a fix after long anticipation for the PSP to be launched.
Well, the first PSP I got had been open and pieces were missing, so I returned it(now you know what they do with returned items).
I got another and had 3 dead pixels, one is very small and there are all in the right hand bottom part of the screen and when I’m playing a game I can hardly notice them, hardly doesn’t mean they completely disappear.
So what do yall think I should do? What would you do?
How many others are just keeping it since it is not so noticeable gameplay and how many dead pixels is it that you are dealing with and just keeping?
well, for my psp, eb games offered me a 1 year warranty for 30 bucks so i jumped on it considering i just knew there would be a dead pixel or two. but you better return the thing soon if you dont have that 1 year thing. the psp comes with a 14 day manufactures warranty so i would keep on returning the system until you found a good one. If my first psp was opened with stuff missing, i would flip and bitch like no tomorrow! so good luck with that and keep the dam reciept.
if they give you any trouble with that, just flip and bitch cuz its an expensive system so you shouldn’t have to put up with any crap.
This is what they wrote to me in part of the email I got for details to return it on coverage time:
Your exchanged PSP system will come with a 90-day limited warranty. Please note that the original limited warranty that came with your brand new product covered a period of 1 year. The warranty coverage on your replacement system will be the greater of your new 90-day limited warranty or the remainder of your original 1-year limited warranty.
I got my psp bout a week ago..yes i have two dead pixels in the center of the screen. It is really annoying me especially since I paid 273 dollars for this sucker after the tax. It would not bother me so much but the two pixels are in the center of the screen and they are two glares that can be seen during dvd’s and games. I bought my psp from Toys R Us and the reciept says that opened items can be returned and exchanged for another. I was wondering if anyone had bought one from Toys R Us and exchanged it for another…? Thank you any replies will be appreciated.
I bought my PSP at Target and it has 1 dead pixel (I think) on the edge. It doesn’t really seem to bother me. That sucks for u man.
hey guys how much will the psp cost after e3 and do you think i should pay 325 for a game and accesories i need? idk if i should but i really cant wait that much longer!!! im like hooked on the psp
Ok..I took it to Toys R Us after I had discovered three dead pixels on my screen. The guy at the electronic section said he found all three I was pointing out and another in the top corner. They said they could not do anything about it so I was given a number to call Sony Customer Support. I am kinda thinking it over..maybe I can just live with the pixels and get over it. I dont really feel like shipping this thing to wherever the hell sony is. Anyone done this..? I dont want to because I bought my psp to play it, and Im sure if i send it to sony it would take a month to get it back…so any comments about sending it to Sony would be appreciated…also do you think they would replace the screen itself or the whole system? It really makes me mad that I spent 273 dollars on it and its already got so many dead pixels. I really dont like Sony to much after this which is why I own nothing of Sony after my last computer. Thanks for any answers.
If you return your PSP to Sony, don’t expect to get a good one back. MANY people have recieved another PSP with even more dead pixels than the ones sent in. Check out the offical Sony fourms.
Hey,
I was wonderin if any pne knows when the 2nd shipment of PSP’s is coming and if it will have as many defective(ie.Dead pixels, buttons etc) units.
Thanx
BS ! I bought one PSP and came with three dead pixels. Guys, look the size of the screen. More than 1 dead pixels is an annoyance. So I went to Playstation Store in San Francisco and made a scene until they promised to exchange for a new one. And they did, since lots of people started to turn away and not buy this S***** product. My new replaced PSP? One big ass green dead pixel right in the middle. I went back to the store and made another scene, since they didn’t want to exchange again or refund me. Another scene and I got my money back. PSP sucks. Don’y buy it. As much as 80% of them HAVE dead pixels. If you settle for a new car with dents on it, go ahead and buy it. Otherwise, steer clear from this defective product and wait until sony have some shame and start with some kind of zero-tolerance for dead pixels and get them exchanged without this horrible hassle.
Gabriel ur gay..and ur just mad..all lcd screens have dead pixel problems (digital cameras..cpus with lcd screens). and if its green it was a stuck pixel not dead dumbass.
well me, i know that when i bought my psp it could come with a dead pixel but i still bought one…come on! it’s still the best hand held game console! sony gave us the best gaming experience so don’t be so hard on them.
follow up. if it’s a size of a dime then i guess Gabriel Cervo has all the right to complain, but act like a B**** in a store?! UNCOOL you dont have the right to own a psp!
I bought my PSP from wal-mart, had a spec of dust under the screen.. i thought no biggie since I’m good at fixing stuff.. I’ll just clean it later as there’ll be more, then my left pad on the 4-way would stick causing me to crash in Wipeout after a barrel roll and a few minor dead pixels (big ones are actually clumps).. so i took it back and got another that had a bump on the screen resembling a rock peck and made the picture distort underneath it.. so i took that back 5 minutes later to the same store, now I have 2 rock pecks (one off the screen) and 3 pixels stuck on, 2 blue ones out, and 2 red pixels out.. these are big.. meaning they’re clumps of like 4 pixels out.. I’m pretty po’d but I have faith in wal-mart as I’ll just take it back to another until I get one that doesn’t look like it’s covered with radioactive sand particles
There’s always hope for a 2nd shipment.. peace
well i exchange mine for the 4X now, first one 4 dead pixel, second one 3 dead pixel, third one screen has a stain on the screen, fourth one has two dead pixel one on each side. but this time i’m gonna keep this one, the hell with the two dead pixel i’m just gonna enjoy my console and cover the two dead pixel with my big thumb he he he. it’s still better than D*.
me to, mine has one dead pixel but i have to search for it in the dark so i dont care. what im worrried about is when i return it for my one year warranty and i dont want my new psp in a year to be full of problems. the one i have now is amazing, i just put yesterdays episode of 24 onto the thing and before i knew it, almost my entire art class gathered around me to watch it (with my wrist strap securely fastened). people love to see new technology like this
holy crap i love watching tv on the go.
I consider a dead pixel as a non functioning pixel during any use.
I consider a broken pixel as a pixel that can be only seen during solid colors.
PSP sucks? PSP is 250 bucks. Id like to see any other person or company design a better handheld that cost 250 and plays as well as the psp does without any defects. You want to sell a product with a zero defect screen well you have to pay more. For 250 thats still sony losing money on each system sold.
The PSP was estimated to have a 300-400 price range and would be a totally acceptable price for a zero defect product. But they have to cut production cost somewhere to lower the price.
You all talk about computer LCD screens with few or no dead pixels, any LCD can have a dead pixel even companies that say they have none have dead pixels on some of their monitors.
LCD isnt a perfected technology and we cant expect sony to use the best of the best manufacturing techniques or companies for something they will sell for 250 bucks.
And you all compare Sonys dead pixel policy to nintendos? Have u seen how small the LCD screens are? They arent as sharp as the PSP, they dont have the resolution of the PSP so how can you compare the screens. SO what if they replace no questions asked, it only plays games and cheap cartridge videos.
They could have went cheap and did cartridges which would have been cheaper. No external memory source. No analog stick. And that would drive the cost down and they could put xtrainto a better screen but then you get something that would suck.
Nothing is perfect accept it.
mine has two dead pixels on the left side but i really dont care. the psp was sony’s best idea, and all the graphics are great
The first PSP I got was from Fry’s, and had one dead pixel. They switched it out no problem. They even let me open the box of the new one, swap the memory stick I had saved games on, pop in the battery and check the LCD for defects before I even left the store. I now have a PSP with perfect screen, and the next gadget I buy will also be from Fry’s.
I returned my psp to toys r us and got my money back since they had none in stock to exchange mine with. I exchanged because of the numerous dead pixels. So i go to Game Crazy a few days later. I walk in purchase one and walk out. Open my psp…and what do I get 4 dead pixels spread around. I call and tell them and tehy have no problem with me exchanging it for a new one. So I take it back later that day and they have a new one already waiting for me. I give them my old one and they give me a new one in a matter of seconds. Take it home…and of course i have dead pixels. This one is probably the worst. It had a vertical line of like 4 pixels, and then two on the side. Should I keep trying till I get a perfect one of even one with just one or two pixels. The pixels are just white glares…very freaking annoying.
keep returning until you get a clean psp, without dead pixels. be strong man, even if you have to go through 50.
furthermore - sonyboy, nintendo ds not only has a less frequent occurance of dead pixels, but when it happens, you call nintendo, and they send you a new ds, free of charge, you dont even have to send your ds first - they give you a pre-paid box to return your old ds in anyway.
nintendo slaughters sony in customer service.
LOL, you must be annoyed at how much times u had to trade ur PSP in and still get dead pixels. I just tryed out Web-Browsing with my PSP, it’s AWESOME.
Hey, Brass, I fixed your triplicated post.
Also.. I fixed how you spelled “since,” because it was really standing out in my mind.
Oh! Jason! E3’s coming up! Do you know where your towel is? Private message me for a bit. If it’s your first E3, I’ll tell you all you need to know to survive in the harsh wilderness of the center. DON’T PANIC.
hey the psp rocks but the dead pixel really piss me of so if anyone finds a pixel recharger please tell william. cool .ps the ds sucks
I have some dead pixels on a PSP that I bought from Toys R Us. Annoying…yes. I went back to the store and some pencil neck CSR told me that it was a normal problem (tried to explain how dead pixels are part of the LCD making process). I know all about LCD making and I know why pixels die. Who is he fooling? I worked in consumer electronics years ago and people would bring 50inch televisions back with 1 dead pixel. To have multiple dead pixels on such a small screen is a testament to Sony’s rapid and sloppy production process.
I called Sony and they claimed that they would send me a new one any time within the next year (assuming I send it off to them). I also filed a complaint at Toys R Us corporate about this particular store and CSR. I was told over the phone that regardless of what I said they should’ve done a return because I was well within the return time frame policy. Corporate said they’d call me back within 1-2 days, so it will be interesting to hear what they have to say.
As far as retailers trying to deny that there is a problem that is just bad business. I spend $250 on something I want NO dead pixels. Sony should’ve taken time to have a more sterile environment when they were rolling out the PSPs. When the CSR looked at the screen he said, “I don’t see any dead pixels.” I told him that was convenient. The thing is…I do. I have 3 that are DEAD. And when looking at yellow or green backgrounds I see multiple specks which are probably dust under the LCD screen. Totally annoying. At least Sony has owned up to the problem. When mass producing as many PSPs as they have lately they obviously didn’t have the best quality going into the work.
I would recommend that if buying a PSP you ask about the return policy and make sure you get the name of the salesperson that sold it to you. It is unacceptable to not be able to return something that is defective. And it is even worse when they try to tell you that a defect is normal. Dead pixels may be normal, but how many do you need before it is an obvious problem? I think 3 is pleanty on a screen that small. My other items with LCD screens have NO dead pixels.
Toys R Us claimed that they received an e-mail telling them not to return PSPs with pixel problems. Obviously, this guy has had complaints before because he opened my PSP manual to the LCD screen page and had a scripted response to my complaint. HE WAS TOTALLY AWARE OF THE PIXEL PROBLEM. As he stood there listening to me vent I just said, “Oh, I see. You stand there with a blank look on your face as I vent, and wait for me to walk out of the store.” At which point I made sure to complain loud enough for everyone within 50 paces of me to hear. Gave the I won’t be shopping at this store again comments. Then I left and called corporate. I recommend that if anyone has a problem with Toys R Us they call and file a complaint with corporate.

i just bought one aswell and im very pleased with it. i have found 1 or 2 dead pixels but they are on the bottom right of the screen and kinda spread out. i got it from gamespot and if they accept exchanges i will probly do so if no ill keep it and before the year is up ill get a new on so that i get a next batch updated psp so as not to have to deal with this problem
It seems that I got really lucky with my psp. I have had it for a few months and it is still in perfect condition. No dead pixels, no sticky buttons, no nothing. I say that Sony made a kick a** system for a cheap price and anyone that says otherwise is wrong!
I bought my first psp bundle at costco for 350 dollars about (that includes the psp package, two games, and a UMD movie). Took it home, one dead pixel about halfway between the center and right hand side of the screen. Not bad, but I took it back anyway. Costco will exchange anything. I could have probably taken the PSP back alone and gotten full refund value out of it. But regardless, I took back the entire thing and got a new bundle. This one had a mass of dead pixels in the lower right hand side of the screen. Returned it again, got one back with 8 scattered dead pixels all around the center area of the screen. This time I went back and asked for the return department manager (just to quicken things up) and explained to him the problem. I then got to open up 3 more PSP systems that were at costco and power each one up until I found one with no dead pixels ( or at least none I could notice ). Props to costco for this awsome customer service.
Well i got my PSP from wal-mart i opened it up and not the first dead Pixel, everything is mint, my freind gtes on with 8 dead pixels scatered, he’s pissed and i am happy, he hates sony, i love them. You see it seems if we get a good unit we like the PSP but if we get a bad one we hate them, this is wrong just becasus you get a bad one don’t give up keep trying. think about it PSP is a real break-threw on Gaming on the Go, Ds don’t stand a chance now that PSP is out……….
GO Sony kick some Nintendo @$$
sorry guys - just saw P3nises feedback. needless to say he tried to hide his IP, but i managed to recover it, sent it to a large group of my internet dork friends who enjoy bandraping asshats like him.
dont think hes going to give us any more problems, his parents are sure to beat the shit out of him when my buds fry his computer because he was an ass…
oh yeah - in case anybody wants to know P3nises ip, its 24.70.95.203 - good thing hes not on dial-up, makes the whole thing easier
hahahha!
Ok guys,
After reading all of your complaints I just had to comment. I have gone through the same horror stories as the rest of you. I got a PSP with one dead pixel in the center and two air bubbles on the screen’s plastic surface just above the LCD. I tried to like it but I just couldn’t. I then took it back to Fry’s and ended up going through 3 more. Each one was worse than my original. One had 8-10 dead pixels. Unacceptable for the size of the screen. I am now PSP less…
Beyond just the dead pixels are the air bubbles I have seen in the plastic covering of the LCD itself. I think this problem is even worse than the dead pixels. I have not encountered a PSP that doesn’t have these. If you run your finger over the screen they will appear as small pot marks or dents in the screen. If you want to see if you have them hold your screen in a bright location (room with lights on or outside) and tilt the PSP and look at the screen from a 30 degree angle.
There are a lot of people saying that 1-2 dead pixels is ok for the PSP and you should live with it. Well, you shouldn’t. I buy and use a lot of LCD’s and most have no more than 2 dead pixels. The most common LCD resolution is probably around 1280×1024. Thats a total of 1,310,720 pixels. Now take the PSP into account. It has a resolution of 480×272, which is only 130,560 pixels. There is no reason we should be seeing PSP’s with dead pixels in the range of 2-8. Especially when the PSP’s main attraction is the supposed quality of its display. From my experience if you got a perfect screen you should consider yourself very very very very very lucky. Since 5 may be the number it takes me to get a good one :-P. I would love to continue to hear peoples responses to these posts and if you have any info on what Sony is doing about it I would love to know. That will be a factor in determining when I buy a new one. Thanks.
Well just thought ild let you guys know.
I got my first psp the day it came out for around $280 value pack.
I was really chuffed the second the employee at gamestop handed it to me…. so i get home give it a full charge and insert the sample UMD.I turn it on and…..BAM! 17 dead pixels in one big bunch right in the middle of the screen!!!!!!!17!!!!! seriously!!!! So i take it back and the same guy serves me i got a quick exchange i take the new psp and runn home i charge it up and i get 3 dead pixels. One in the middle and 2 together at the top.So i went back again and got served by someone else this time i explained my case and i agreed into exchanging 1 more time i got the psp home charged it and……. it had no dead pixels!!!!!It was perfect!!!!!Until…..the following day while i was playing ridge racers the square buttone stuck once but that wasnt much of a problem……but then it constantly kept sticking and then i got so pissed of i went to gamestop and got my money back…… and then bought a DS!!!!! not a dead pixel in sight!!!!SONY FU!!!! NINTENDO FU2!!!
no what what if there was a psp out there with all dead pixles that would suck and my friend has a ds and it has a dead pixle and when i play it i cant get my eyes off it it just ruined the game
im not buying a fricken lcd until the whole damn thing clears up. i bought an lcd monitor, BAM!, blue one in middle of screen. Im sorry but why were these invented.

Just make sure you take a picture of your PSP before you send it to them. My first laptop had some problems with the fan and the keyboard. I sent it to Hewlett Packard.. and they sent it back to me with a cracked screen. Then they refused to do anything about breaking my screen. So, now I own a Toshiba.
