PSP, DS Launch Dates and Prices
If it’s on the internet, it must be true. According to MCV, they understand that both Nintendo and Sony have set aside the week of March 18, 2005 as the launch dates for their new handheld systems. We’re not sure what strategy the companies are employing by launching the DS and PSP at the same time. It’s still too early and nothing has been confirmed as official. However, both companies have stated that “Spring 2005″ would be a likely goal for launch.
Pricing for both units, however, can be more assured. Sony will expect to sell 10 million units at their $249 to $299 price tag within the first year. Nintendo is expected to launch the DS unit for $199 or less.

You got one thing right, Sony does ‘launch’ well! Some good race games, an FPS, an RPG or too, and I could easily lose myself on a subway train or bus (well, until the short-lived batteries wear out.)

first off, it’s not the “gameboy DS”, it’s the nintendo ds, and nintendo has clearly stated that it is NOT a gameboy, and it will be released on the 21st, and will be 150 bucks, and im sorry for correcting your horribly offending incorrect statement
Why is the ds better? Because, I hate sony. Actually I don’t agree with whoever said “gameboy” is a bad name to have atteched to the system. Do you know how well the Gameboy Advance sells? And that’s not to just kids who play pokemon. My brother has one and he is 31. My ex-girlfriend’s 80 year old grandmother has a gameboy. They really appeal to everyone. My parents don’t like video games that much but even my dad will sit around and play tetris on a gameboy. I think gameboy is one of the things that has kept Nintendo alive for so long. They make more in profit off of gameboys and games for it than they make from Gamecube, that’s for sure. The amazing thing is when you see the sales figures and see how well the gameboys are STILL selling even though they’ve been out so long. Of course Nintendo claims the DS isn’t the successor of the gameboy, I’m not sure that makes any sense though. As much as they say graphics don’t matter, say they realease the GBR (who knows that they’ll call the next gameboy), the graphics will HAVE to be better. How will it compare otherwise? Right now the DS is in competition with the PSP (and even the graphics on the DS aren’t really close to the PSP). Nintendo confounds me and the funny thing is (at least in the handheld market) they always manage to stay on top with products that are as capable. Let’s see what happens with this round because I’m sure if anyone can overcome Nintendo’s lead in the handheld world, it would be Sony. I’m by no means a Sony fan, I don’t even own a playstation, if Nintendo was completely destroyed I think it would be a very sad day. Let’s hope they can keep competing.
correction… it was supposed to read that Nintendo stays on top with products that AREN’T as capable. (examples being the Game Gear, Atari Lynx, etc. that were way better with graphics but couldn’t overcome the power of the Gameboy).
One other thing about the debate of how much things cost… as much as some of the parts DO cost (the LCD screen for example) I’m sure Sony would get a deal for the ammount of them that they are purchasing. It’s like going to Sam’s Club or BJ’s, you buy in bulk you get a huge discount. Now to a single person, buying millions of LCD screens to save $50 a screen might not be worth it, but to Sony who has to buy that many, it would be a good deal. I have no idea how much they DO save buying in bulk but I’m saying that it’s something to consider.

Geez, who the hell started this PSP vs. DS issue? The only reason most of you DS jerks are bashing the PSP is because YOU CAN’T AFFORD ONE. Get a job, save up, and SHUT UP.
I’ve played the PSP which is OK, but it kinda sucks, too. The DS is loads better. I just have a question for all those who are against the DS: Have you actually ever played the DS? Cuz you don’t knnow what you’re missing

The psp price range sounds good for me. Let’s hope we’ll have a good wipeout, ridge racer and GT at launch and i’ll be in heaven. Anyway it will never compete with the first playstation launch … I remember myself playing ridge racer, toshinden & destruction derby … Mmmh that was so good and it was truly arcade at home… Now at least, it’s arcade in your pocket
