psp linux

Hey, it worked for the PS2, and almost every other system out there. Let’s get Linux on this ripe system and see what it really can do…

ARGHHHHHHHH

I was going to post this.
Though I contacted them for further information and they said they didnt have much they could say about ti at this time.
Ouch, I mean i was just looking at the site 2day.
:-|

What the!?! could someone explain what this linux thing is supposed to do. is it just an opperating system or what?

(im a linux virgin so i have no idea what it is)

Yeah Its an operating system like Windows.
But its much faster and less buggy.

I dont use it coz its not as compatible as Windows + its hard to use.
Then again that was ages ago im sure some of the GUIs are more user friendly…
Still nothing cuts it like windows.
:-)
Nice idea though, The handheld version could be cool if done well, I may even get a extra PSP so it could be linux :-P

Imagine loading a snes emulator in psp and playing snes roms on psp? My God they should make something like that!! whos with me on this? I really hope linux makes this possible

Linux is far better than win xp. i hav Suse Linux running on one machine for 9months with a restart or shutdown aprt for adding a few hard drives. Windows needs rebooted at least 3times a week to clear out he ram.

Linux on the PSP is gonna kick ass

For an example of the flexibility of linux, check out http://www.ipodlinux.org. Thats right, clever clogs, linux on the ipod

All I need to know is, is it possible to install emulators on psp linux? (eg. snes9x, gens, mame32). Someone please tell me?!?

what is this point of having Linux on the PSP?! The PSP’s default operating system should suffice.

What is linux do? Why is so great and when is it coing out?

When is it coming out? And how much is it for psp?

My theory is that you could open the PSP and cut the memory stick wires. You would then tie an USB wire into it. Hook the USB cable up to your computer and download some version of Linux onto it. You then in theory could download most anything Linux supports onto it. Just solder the correct wires together and wrap them in electrical tape, if you want to use the memory stick.

All of this is my personal idea on how to do this…BTW the PSP is $249.99

Linux is open source and generally free.

[Google Definition: Linux]

if linux was installed in it, perhaps with familiar linux or something, you could actualli use it to sniff the fast growing 802.11 networks that’s popping up everywhere… even in macdonald’s

Nathan you moron!!!! there’s a USB port in it already! Don’t theorize what to do unless you do your homework, besides where would you put the OS is there’s no memory card? O and the real prob here is getting the correct key assignments or combinations so the you don’t need a full keyboard.

How do you download movies to the psp? CompUSA advised that there is a free website via google, but I could’nt find it…

No site yet for this idea or is there… IPOD (or similar system) has 20 GB and 40 GB capacity. I would like to burn my own UMD discs but, it’s wicked expensive!
How about interfacing the IPOD to work with the PSP! 3 options todo this; WIFI, USB or custom DUO interface card. With linux installed on the PSP
the idea would basically be to use my IPOD(or similar device, dell jukebox, other high capacity storage device.) as an external Hard Drive to store games, ripped DVDs(MPEG-4), Pics, etc. ANY IDEAs to get this started?
I think that it would be a complicated hack but very possible and pretty damn useful!

-DUTCH DUDE

I know this post is dead but who cares. If you could make the entire linux OS with it’s GUI fit into the internal rom storage of the PSP (32meg) with its 4 meg of DRAM, you should work for NASA. also if you had linux on your IPOD that had USB 2.0 support you should already be able to send songs to your memory card in your PSP. Wi-Fi streaming of video and music might not be far away and would probably use less battery than using the UMD drive. did someone say UMD burners are expensive? really how much because they’re proprietary and even devlopers have to send their stuff to sony to be burned to disc. And the built-in wi-fi sniffer is very decent. and the antenna inside isn’t fully omidirectional so you can actually walk around and find the souce. And incase you didnt know the PSP has upgradable firmware. that would be the easiest way to flash the rom on the psp is to make the OS package and then use a wi-fi router and a homebrewed webserver to intercept the PSPs call to mommie for an update and instead it takes it off your own webserver. A similar thing is done for the WipeOut web browser hack. Linux and Windows share the X86 platform but both are very different and really shouldn’t be compared. Windows has to stretch across a wide margin of users from your grandmother to your 3 year old niece that’s in preschool to a man running a network with thousands of users. Linux on the otherhand is sorta clunky but very, very powerful if you know how to use it. If you like OSX then going to Linux is like taking a few steps backwards (not for long really) from OSX’s looks and feel to…a little before Imac’s success. They all have their problems. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. If every software for windows was written using .net it would be far more stable of an OS.

The reason to put Linux on the PSP is simple. It would allow you to work around curent restictions. If your PSP has a Linux OS you can change the PSP’s default USB setting from Slave to master and then you could use any portable device for memory and storage, i.e. ipod, usb drive, micro drive, laptop drive, etc. instead of those expensive and limited ProDuo memory sticks Sony sells. W/ this power we could rip and trade games, movies tivo music and anything else. now if you want to sniff for wireless, look at high security stuff, thats what I sell, I won’t mention Air”who” but the leet know what I mean >:^)~

yo man, i need to know if you can install games into your psp memory stick. I need to know this because i dont want to buy games all the time and shit, is just a waste of money.

no, not currently. psp games have a 1.8 gb storage and the largest possible memory card you could get is 1 gb, and those run for $150-$200. so, doesnt really make sense now does it.

Actually they do have 2gb cards and I think they even have higher, but ya they are expensive. Thats why everyone wants to rig up alternate storage, for movies, games music etc. If we could just make the usb connection go from slave to master we would be all set.

Question, do any of you stupid script kitties, and wanna be’s ever research your questions and ideas before posting them? Or do you just like to see yourself post, even if said post proves your ignorance?

just wondering if one of you could send me the program you use to change the format of your movies so they work on the PSP. Also do you have to create another folder on the memory card for movies. currently movies and video clips dont work on my PSP, what format do they have to be? please help me…

FREE PROGRAM and explanation how 2 get those movies on youre psp

pretty cool program easy 2 use and the site explains a lot

here ya go

Is someone working on linux for the PSP right now? When will they be done? Because it will be awesome to be able to connect a portable hd to the psp and run movies and songs from the PSP.

how da hell do u freaking dam play using ur psp and playing gameboy games on it.!!!~!

yuo hav tp [ut teh hock-ups to the back.

Okay, go to psphacker.com and download the programs there. Don’t worry, after a few hours of messing with it, you’ll finally be able to play GBA games on your PSP without sound (or messed up sound) and most at half speed with severe graphic glitches! Alright! Now you can sort of play good games on your PSP!

Or you can do the smarter, cheaper, and easier thing: Go sell that slick brick at your local GameStop, then use the credits to buy yourself an ACTUAL GBA SP. Then use the rest of the credits to buy some actual games.

Might I suggest Wario Ware Twisted, Grand Theft Auto Advance, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Super Monkey Ball Jr., Iridion II, Riviera: The Promised Land, or classic games like Shantae, Metal Gear Solid, and the very under-rated but thoroughly awesome Survival Kids.

first off the PSP rocks. Second, its really not about playing gay ass GBA games or even old atari games on a PSP. Its about being inventive, learning technology and using it in a new way. Its exploring, learning, and doing things that the corporations didn’t provide you with. Video games drive the computer industry. We did not need to go to the moon, but we did, and look at what we learned. necessatiy is the mother of invention, but most inventions are born of curiosity rather than true need.

Actually, all emulation IS about playing older games on newer systems. Most of the reasoning for this is that a lot of people just feel that modern games aren’t that spiffy. You can dress it up in whatever fancy clothes you like, but the purpose is still the same.

Using a PSP to play GBA games is not going to teach a developer a thing. For one, the emulators for the unit are made from EXISTING CODE. That’s like saying: “Well, we’re at the moon, let’s put an ORANGE flag up there instead of an American flag and say that’s progress.” It’s not progress in the least. Actually, since the GBA is still available and very cheap, it’s more or less piracy.

Now, people making homebrew GAMES are breaking new ground. Adapting old emulator routines is not progress. Oh, the reason for going to the moon was to advance technology without having to go into a war. Thus the Space Race or “Cold War” era. Technology has a tendancy to advance fastest in times of war. Our heading to the Moon was part of this “war.” We needed to go there because if we didn’t, the Russians would.

Are we in any less of a war with technology. Sure I appreciate the products being produced, but I also understand that Sony’s attempts to prevent the PSP from doing certain things is based on profits, not that they shouldn’t. But by overcoming thier preventions we reject that we should have to buy a movie 4 times just to view it on different equipment. We also force them to develop new and better technology to stop us, and therefore push the industry along. If NASA had been left to thier own devices they would have made a much more efficient space program, and we still wouldn’t have landed on the moon. But the president forced them to take chances, push harder and achieve.

Only the curious will learn and only the resolute overcome the obstacles to learning. The quest quotient has always excited me more than the intelligence quotient.

Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage, and those who manage what they do not understand.

alright i know this is off the subject but how do you get your frekin psp online!!!!!!!

Hey its really simple to get your psp online. First i suggest that you should have done some reaserch before you posted your ignorance on a blog. But i guess that can’t be helped now. First you setup your network conection only you change your dns setting to whatever site you want to go to first. Then you go to wipout pure and go to the link titled download. Instead of the psp going to the wipeout pure site it will direct you to whatever your dns was. You can also play vs games online by use of xbox connect. Oh I almost forgot, you can also download the new 2.0 software for the psp. That has a web browser in it.

Enjoy :)

never mind Moses’ ignorance, can someone translate Judith’s post for me? I don’t read fat finger text very well, and when you combine fat finger with slang and illiteracy, well…..I’m lost. Well nuff said, Judith get back to your burgers and fries and fuel my economy! unless you worthless f#@ks start dropping like flies there won’t be any social security money, and McDonalds is in one of my mutual fund portfolios, so eat up! >:^)~

PLEASE JUST MAKE PSP LINUX AS SOON AS POSSIBLE LETS NOT DEEBATE WHETHER ITS GOOD ITS PERFECT!!! SO LETS WORK AS A COMMUNITY AND MAKE THIS THING REAL!!!!!!

which is better, a Nintendo DS or a PSP? Im gona buy one so I nead my money worth.

Uuuh… a psp dumbass lol… nintendo ds sucks ass all u an do is talk on it… on the other hand a psp plays shit that looks real buddy

Wow, _every_ post here that wasn’t simply asking questions was _completely_ wrong.

Desolder the memory stick interface and solder on USB? Huh? So memory stick and USB are “the same”, you just need to “hook the wires up”? No. USB != memory stick. Memory sticks are connected to memory stick controller chips, USB ports are connected to USB controller chips. No amount of “soldering” will change that.

If every piece of Windows software was written with .Net, then it would be a more stable operating system? The point of protected-mode is so that programs can’t interfere with each other, no matter how buggy one program may be. Windows should not crash, no matter what crappy application you run on it. [Though the application may crash.]

Now, for those of you who think that Linux is the holy grail that will “remove all the restrictions”, you are, like everyone else on this thread, utterly confused. An operating system’s control over its hardware is only as good as it’s device drivers. Just having linux run on the PSP doesn’t mean we’ll magically be able to write to things we werent able to write to before, or magically change the USB controller from “slave to master mode.” Even if the USB chip inside the PSP supports that, just having Linux wouldn’t magically make that possible, one would have to write device drivers to accomplish it. If you can write a device driver to do it, well, then, you could write kernel-mode homebrew to do it as well, and I haven’t seen any that does that.

Why post technical comments when you don’t have any idea what you are talking about? Does it really matter if random internet people think you are “smart”?

Anyways, linux is on the PSP now. Check out df38.dot5hosting.com/~remember/chris
