Sony PSP to get 50GB hard drive?

No… its not going to get one. You might have seen this rumor on other sites, but its not true. Thanks to Gamespot for clearing this up.

From GameSpot:
“RUMOR #2: Sony is working on a spicy new PSP that will feature an internal 50 gigabyte hard drive.

Source: Rumor fire-stoker Joystiq.com.

The official story: “We have not changed the specs of PSP, please see the release dated 2/3 with a list of specs of PSP for the North American launch.”–Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson.

What we heard: According to Joystiq.com, the PSP may be goin’ all iPod up in here. Its article says that at a recent conference, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter “let on” that he heard Sony was designing a PSP with an internal 50-gigabyte hard drive, thus immediately brewing comparisons to Apple’s iPod MP3 player. The idea of a hard drive also lends credence to Sony’s earlier admission that downloadable games may be a possibility in the future. Too bad, then, that Pachter didn’t let anything on. “I said that ‘if’ Sony were to put a 50GB hard drive in the PSP, it would be an iPod killer,” he told GameSpot.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus. What a difference a preposition makes (though a great idea…)”

So no 50GB hard drive. Thanks Sony, not that this wouldn’t be cool, but if I buy this thing at launch, I don’t want new versions popping up after only a couple of months. Anyone else feel this way, or just me? Post in the comments section of this post to tell us how you feel.

I would be pretty mad if only a few months after I spent all my money on the Sony PSP a new version came out that poked fun of my older weaker version!

Wow, if there was a 50gb hdd in the PSP it would be EXTREMELY pricy… It already has a huge tag on its head, don’t need to it go up in price or anything… I just hop this doesnt turn into another GameGear episode…

I doubt the PSP will be like the Game Gear. Remember, this is Sony and people buy Sony products regardless of quality because it says SONY on it. Not so with Sega.

Also, the PSP isn’t attacking the DS or GBA SP directly. All of Sony’s recent advertisments are aimed at attacking the iPod and other DAP and PVPs. If anything, the PSP’s performance will be rather good! I mean, you can play watered down versions of games you already own on the PS2! Isn’t that enough appeal? You can also store a bit over 240 songs! There’s no way a normal iPod with it’s capacity of over 5,000+ songs can compare with 240+ songs! The Apple iPod will surely lose to the PSP and Howard Stringer MUST be the best and most capable president for Sony ever!

im not a big memory man myself (electronics wise) but what good is a huge hard drive when memory cards can hold everything you need? i know a 50g hdd on the psp will never happen but it is the same price you have to pay for memory in any direction you go so who cares.

i think that psp is going to be the greatest break through that has ever happened to sony! i mean ps2 is great but when u have a handheld one…wow, it for sure will not be worth 300$ just because of its look, but what it does. I am the greatest fan of ps2 and i for one can’t wait until march 24 when it comes out…but im not sure where to buy it,if i go to EB it costs 350$, but if i go to walmart or something it will probably be a little less. I want to say that SONY, keep up the good work, because the next brilliant thing you guys think of, i’ll be the first to buy it! And im sure that i have friends that like playstation 2 as much as me, so they’ll probably go nuts trying to find it and will buy it at any cost. PSP IS THE GREATEST THING THAT SONY HAS INVENTED. And if i were to meet the man who works for SONY who invented it, i woul be the happiest human alive!! SONY PSP IS SOOOOOOOO AMAZING!!

Mike

Easy there Mike, the PSP is great no doubt. 7 days to go, and then we all get our hands on one.

Jason, e-mailed you, so let me know if you got it.

Maybe it is just the workings of my sinister mind.. but.. yeah.. ever since they announced the name.. this is all I think when I hear those initials.

LINK

Darn my evil mind.

Wow. the definition of PSP’s abbreviations is pretty scart!

Well I think we already know this is BS.
Still a 50Gb drive would have ruled.

you’re right, having a new psp version release a couple months after launch would really suck. all my friends would be laughing in my face cuz most of them are gonna wait a while for one reason or another. email is unohooo@sbcglobal.net i’m so excited right now is wed 8.09 pst… only 4 more hours til i get my psp at midnight with doughnuts and coffee(haha…i bet u don’t get that at ur gamestop or eb)back to twiddling my thumbs for four more hours…

This is gay i ordered my psp from pcconnection.com about 3 weeks ago and it said on the site earlyer today that it was going to ship in 3-5days and i jest checked it and it said that shipping was 2+weeks. bullshit. But i was wondering if in the future you could hook up a usb external hard drive to the usb port because the duo pro memory sticks are a ripoff 1gb for 150 dollers,The space of 2 dvds.WTF, and i dont think that sony will ever make burners for umds because the only thing that uses the umds is the………………psp damn you sony!(SONY= A Love Hate Relationship)get back to me…………peace

Is that for the Duo or the PRO Duo? Both are the same size with similar packaging.. but only one will work with the PSP.

both are compatible with the PSP. Pro DUO is a higher speed version, and of course it’s backwards compatible with duo media.

Only specialized electronics retailers are forcing the bundled game on Canadians, while Wal-Mart, ToysRUs and Sears are selling just the Value Pack :)

the pro duo doesn’t work for atrac 3 files on the psp…everything else is fine

Is it possible or going to be possible to hook up an externat hdd to the psp. like an ipod mini or what ever, i know the usb port is different but what if u used some usb changers that are simply a double sided female usb plug and then plug a male and small 4 pin head and plug the small 4 pin into the psp and the ipod or hdd to the female end of the double sided esb plug.

I hope this makes any sense.

Ah. You mean like one of those Giga Bank Micro Drives? I think you can fit some kinds of mini flash drives to the PS2, so maybe they will have them in the future? Would be nice.

This is probably one of the best ideas if it actually happened. IF you tink about it it will wipe out all mps/video players on the market bacause of its capabilities. (aka. archos/ipod) The only thing that might be bad is battery life. If this thing had a 50 gig HD i would easly go out and spend up to 400 on it. I would only do this though if it supported Divx format movies because we all kno that you have them.

They only reason im not going out and buying a psp right now is the chance that song might come out w/ an updated model w/ a hdd. If psp had a 20-50 gb hdd i wouldn’t hesitate a second to go out and buy one. And for everyone saying that a mini hdd in the psp would jack the price up on the psp to around 350-400 dollars are retarded, b/c everyone who already has one bought a $100 memory stick anyways. If sony made the psp with a hard drive it would completely demolish all other competition from ipod and other portable media centers.

you nigggas are gay nerds

And you’re an ignorant fuck, Hater. :-)

Anyway, back on topic, although I’d love nothing more than a 50GB HD on the PSP, I think a 1GB memory stick is plenty for music and the likes (if only they were cheeper). Moreover, using ATRAC3 compression, I could probably fit a good 350+ songs on the sucker, which is good enough, considering that I only have 5GBs worth of music, and I’d change out the songs every week anyhow.

I have a psp And a 40g ipod/has some creative hacker made software to use the ipod’s hard drive to supplement the psp’s memory?

Who invented the PSP anyway? BUT it’s still cool!!!!

Seeing that it’s made by Sony, I’d assume that it was invented by Sony as well. Just an assumption, you know. It’s something that most humans make.

it wouldn’t even be possible to put a 50gb hard drive in the psp without doubling the size, or replacing the umd unit (which they won’t do because the are releasing movies in umd format). the ipod is basically an encased hard drive with some circuitry (which is why it’s so large). what they could do is place flash rom arrays in there, but 50gb of flash memory would be pricy.

it’s a gaming unit more than anything.

you can’t just connect your ipod to your psp by buying gender changers and hope everything works together.

there are quite a few things to take into consideration before attempting to hook up your psp to your ipod:

1) is the psp os embedded? most likely.

2) does it allow homemade software?
-if not, how will you byass this? (hardware modification, software modification)

3) will the os allow execution of games through a hard drive? what checks are in place/have to be defeated?

4) is it legal? probably not

5) can an average user understand how to do this? probably not

6) will a user want to modify the psp themselves?

n) … etc…

I think we will see many psp mods to come, some that may even connect your ipod to your psp, but it will be more for the hobbyist and not for the average consumer. With sony’s other products, the media was already a standard (cd/dvd). you won’t be finding umd writers anytime soon. this means external storage through the memory stick slot or usb drive is your only option.

I just bought a psp, and I would be really pissed off if Sony came out with a new model. That is just like throwing money in the street! If Sony releases another psp I will never buy a sony product again. I would also go to Sony and kick the CEO in the nuts!

If you read the old messages in this forum, you’ll see that dmgice said that the just because sony’s name is on the product people will buy it no matter what the quality,(*cough*ps2*cough*)anyways he also mentioned that the game gear didn’t sell well because it had sega on it, and there was a time when sega was dare I say it, COOL! So it shouldn’t matter who makes it just as long as it’s good… Oh and the 50gb psp is insane, but then again everyone who bought a ds will also be dissapointed, because next year a possibility is that GBE will come out so people you’ve already wasted your money, no matter what you bought!

Oh and if you remember anyone who bought the original playstation was dissapointed when PS1 came out, and now the same goes with playstation 2 owners, anyway we all knew this might happen(damn you sony) so suck it up YOU BOUGHT IT ALREADY!

take a look at this! it’s exciting.

your link doesn’t work…

Ur right…..it doesn’t work…. -_-

couldn’t you just hook up a portable external hard drive to the psp by buying a usb cable that will fit?

I don’t think that there will ever be a hard drive on the PSP that is big enough for our imaginations. Whoever thought there would be 50GB on PSP was a dreamer. They would never do that because it is all about making money to them. Putting out games and movies that people buy make them more money. If everyone could just go out and buy one of these, hook it up to their comp, and upload games, videos, music, and whatever else then they would just make money on selling the PSP and on nothing else.

One thing though… I would still like to see if sony or a 3rd party company could develop an external HD that can attach to the top of the PSP through the USB port.

it is cool that it lets you download new versions of it so far it boosted up my security for online play

Why dont wetry using a protable 50 gig hd with usb 2.0 and a femal coverter dual plus the usb plug for psp to the drive. wouldnt that work

Think about it guys. Sony pays around 56 cents for the hardware to make a one gig pro duo then turns around and sells it for better than a hundred and fifty. As time progresses the storage limit is going to increase. I don’t see it as being to long (2 years on the outside) that there will be 20 gig cards out there. They make way to much money off them to nix their use by including a HD in a psp.

If you plug a bus-powered external hard drive into the USB port on the PSP, will the PSP be able to run it? I guess I’m trying to ask whether the USB port on the PSP is powered or not. If it is powered, then you can use a small external hard drive to store files and play them on PSP. If it’s not powered, then you have to plug the hard drive into the wall for power, and that’s not cool.
