Sony UMD is “common application for everyone”
Who is in charge of things over at Sony/SCEA nowadays? Opening up a proprietary Sony format, such as the Sony UMD, to other media producers is not in the Sony business model. Sony doesn’t open up formats until after they figure out no one, the public mainly, is adopting it. Perhaps steep licensing fees or just Sony trying to grapple vendors prevents third-party production of such Sony medias. For them to open up a Sony format before a US Sony product lunch, well, that is just Sony asinine.
But, it is GOOD news for us. We’re just not used to that sort of thing from Sony.
This post is not brought to you by Sony.
It is brought to you by Gizmodo and their sweet Gadget Mojo.

I thoguht they are just opening up it to companys, not the public. Like someone could create a UMD music player. I’m pretty sure you can use it for data on the PSP, or thats what I’m reading from the blogs. If I’m wrong, then that would be sweet. That is, unless I have a UMD burner.
Oh, joy. Do you REALLY want a UMD burner? I mean, seriously.. it’s a SONY product! They charge $900 for their 4GB Memory Stick Duo, imagine what they’ll charge you for that writer. I think the reason they opened it up for movie studios and music companies is to try and give their whole convergence idea anything resembling market relevance. I think that this quote from Nintendorks.com sums it all up for me.
“Hey guys! I’ve got this great little device that plays games, music, and movies! Wait…did I mention that you’ll have to re-buy all your favorite music and movies in its proprietary format and you can’t get through one sitting of a LOTR movie without recharging the batteries?” - Nintendorks.
*laughs* Actually, here’s a good way of looking at it.
Cost of 20GB iPod = $290
Cost of a PSP and a 4GB Memory Stick Duo = $1,100
(PSP is supposed to be $200 and their new 4GB Memory Stick Duo is $900 as announced at the recent CES.)
Cost of a portable DVD player = $150. (There’s some decent and cheap ones these days.)
Cost of a PSP with estimated cost of what a UMD burner would cost = $500 (I’m being fairly conservative and stating the UMD Burner at $300. Which is improbable. Sony launched some of their first writers at $500+)
Well, whatever.
Oh, Matt! You asked how to put movies and music on the DS? Go to Lik-Sang and shell out $25 for a Movie Player. Then, go buy a 1 or 2GB Compact Flash card. 1GB CF cards are as low as $70. I’ve seen 2GB at around $120. Not bad. Considering that a 2GB CF card is *gasp* larger than a UMD disc in terms of space. If you want an official device from Nintendo to do that, buy a Play-Chan from Lik-Sang. So far the price is $50 and it uses SD cards. A 1GB SD card will set you back about the same as a 1GB CF card, in some places I have seen 1GB SD cards for as low as $65 advertised. A 2GB SD card will net you in the $120 to $150 dollar range. The GBA Move Player uses the GBM format and save battery life by doing so. The Play-Chan uses MPEG4 (Same format that the PSP does.) So, to answer your question: Nintendo already has done “sumtin like that with the ds”; but you may not have opened your eyes to see it.
dude holy S!@T how the hell i am going to beg my dad to buy me 250 psp and 4 GB that cost 900 You must be some rich B8&%h to buy that
Who said you had to get a 4GB card, just get a 70 buck 512mb one. And oh ya, you could always spend your own money, and not your parents money.
looks like dmgice is a little upset that he went with the DS first of all who the hell would watch a movie on that peice of sh*& screen on the DS? verses the beautyful screen on the PSP and I would also have to agree with Jet on the fact that no one said you had to get a 4gb chip, its pointless stick with the 512mb. in otherword the DS is half the machine and almost the same price after a few games and they still have mario holy sh*% I love Nintindo but drop fuc&*($ Mario the game is over. and I would like to see Nintindo get GTA fat chance but hay you can always play wild arms HAHAHAHHA GET A PSP!
i agree. i like both systems but the ds’s games are getting less appealing by the minute (i dont want to be playing mario this and that mario party 18 or mario proctology or something while the psp has metal gear acid and gran turismo 4 soon*) and it sure looks like Sony has put alot more thought into the psp then nintendo did with ds.
can someone tell me about psp live for sony, i believe it was one of the articles that mentioned that and i just gots ta know
Hmm? Not upset at all. I got to play both systems at E3 and spend a lot of time with the PSP after E3. It’s just I think that you should buy a PSP for the games, not the ability to play movies. Especially considering that it costs more to watch your own movies on the PSP than it does to watch them on a DS/GBA.
The PSP screen does not impress me and the sound on the PSP is a step backwards from the DS. But, eh. You get Metal Gear with cards, and the same game as GTA 3 with a new map. Who can resist? *laughs* You can also watch movies I already have stored on my GBA Movie Player. Yes, I spent the money on a 4GB CF Card for the GBA Movie Player. It works pretty well, I can listen to music, watch the entire first season of Family Guy AND Aqua Teen Hunger Force if I want to, read a few books, go over my over 300+ E3 and Akon pictures, and play Punch-Out. A PSP can’t claim that. Especially considering you would need more than 1GB of space to fit everything I mentioned above. Live Action stuff is actually rather sharp on the GBA Movie Player. You get the same amounts of compression visible on PSP video UMDs. The only real reason the PSP screen looks sharper is the brighter back light and the heavy plastic gloss over the screen that acts as a magnifying agent. It looks really nice until you step out of the house. Then you can’t actually see the PSP screen because of the sunlight. Whereas, in the same situation with a DS, I can still finish watching The Breakfast Club and it will still be visible.
The problem with the PSP -to me anyways- is a lack of RPGs and games I find appealing. Can I play Katamari Damacy on the PSP? Nope. How about Final Fantasy 3? Nope. I can also play a large assortment of older GBA titles like Doom 2, Final Fantasy 1 & 2, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Tactics Ogre, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, a ton of NES classics, and more. The best part of the DS? Watch closely! *presses the Y button* Look! It RESPONDED. Heh.
While the PSP has a better for movies, the DS has a decent enough screen for video games. Super Mario 64 looks amazing on the DS. Some amazing games are coming to the DS, like James Bond and Age of Empires. The PSP is going to be awesome, but so is the DS.
The PSP will be coming out with RPGs and other great games. Both the DS and PSP are designed with a teen audience and older in mind, so there is no doubt in my mind that the DS will begin to launch better games. The problem with the PSP is the battery life and the fact that you need a large memory stick, but I have found that you can get a one gig duo for 77 dollars, you can just get two for that price and you got it made. The DS will be overshadowed with the new version of the Gameboy that will be coming out. The PSP will be around for a while because people are suckers for graphics and not quality. I say save your money wait a year before you buy anything, see what improvements Sony and Nintendo can do to their machines especially battery life and make your decision from there.
77 bucks for a 1GB duo? Show me this place! I have only seen the regular blue one for arounf 120, and the “game ones” (which are just neon colored ones) for around 150.
I saw that dmgice said he had seen 1 Gb SD cards as low as $69, and 2Gb at $120-$150! can you please tell me were because I need a couple for my cel phone!
Cool! Anyhow, the 1GB cards are $69.95 at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Circuit City STORES. For some reason, Circuit City and Best Buy only lists ONE style of SD card on their site. The one I have is a Kingston SD Card. It was bought in store. Office Max has a sale almost every week and -with mail in rebates- you can get a 1GB SD card for as low as $40.
Techdepot.com has 1GB for $77.
Amazon has them as low as $69.99 but I don’t recognize the brand name. (Danae-Elec)
Hope that helps.
dmgice and look you are both morons, first off, the PSP has many more capabilities than the DS, reguardless of the size of the memory stick the games take up less than 500kb for most games….. it comes standard with a 32 mg stick, for the people who want to play music on their PSP can get a bigger stick….. and the movies that are going to be released in UMD format are only going to $20-$30 the price of a DvD…… so big woopty frikin do if you have to buy the say movie twice…… as far as people being suckers for graphics and not quality YOU ARE INSANE!!!! The PSP is the best handheld as far as quality and graphics……. Sony has fixed many of the problems that occurred in the japanese version of the PSP before the US release…… Nintendo will never be able to keep up with sony now with this release, even if they do release a new GB….. nintendo is more directed at the younger gamers….. The PSP is a 128 bit graphic system the DS is only a 64 bit graphic system come on…. nintendo took a very large step back when they designed it in comparison to the what sony did…..
Bla Bla Bla, Healer. Where do you come of to slander people who have a much more intellectual outlook on the gaming systems?
1. $20 - $30 for a UMD movie are you insane? I get my movies for $15 or less on DVD.
2. You must be a rich fizucker to want to buy all your movies again for the convenience of portability.
3. Over the years Sony has gone down drastically in their quality department. You could use to get a fine long lasting electronic device from them no problem. Now all they care about is meeting deadlines and getting their product out before anyone else. The fact that they “fixed” the problems the device had in Japan shows that they have poor quality. If they really were as reputable as you think, they would have released it without problems the first time. Also what about the PS2, lets see how many problems did that have when it came out? Oh, so you think they are still have the best quality. They manufacture their products now in hopes that they will break and you will have to buy them all over again, they are a rip-off.
As for Nintendo, I have never had any problems with any of their products. I don’t think the DS is the greatest thing in the world either though. Not much to say about them cause they kept their great standards.
If Sony opens up their UMD format to the public and the PSP will be able to run media written to those discs I will be impressed. For me personally I don’t care for either product and am just waiting for the day that they change something about either of them that makes it worth the money. Right now I’d rather just use my Pocket PC. Look I can play solitaire! OOO I can also use emulators to play all my favorite classic games, store them all on a small and affordable CF or SD card. It has GPS, a multimedia player that can play movies and music, word processing, the works! If I need some high graphics assault games, I’ve got my lovely computer. Custom built with most of the hookups, but I can upgrade it easily. It plays games from all the consoles ever released with emulators plus at a better quality then the consoles. Woops I can’t play them portably though, aww to bad, but do I care? Nope, I can always come back to it later. It is not an incredible necessity to be able to play high graphics games, that do not compare to computer game graphics, portably. Read a book or something if you are sitting around waiting for something. And I hope that no one that uses these systems actually go out of their way to play and sit around staring at a screen with their friends. I believe the only thing these portable systems were meant to do is entertain kids so that they don’t annoy their parents or for easily distracted and entertained teens. OOOO look shiny!
SONY is just a name stupid people think means quality because they cost more than other brands.
Ok here is what I have to say.I was watching x play and stuff when that show with the two girls came on.They were judging what was better nintendo ds or psp.Now I have a ds.But they said that psp can go country wide. When I talked to a nintendo operator he said nintendo ds will be able to go country wide also they just havnt created any games to do so yet.so
I f you disagree respond and Ill get back to you later.
My thougts…
I like the PSP, it is a excellent machine, but the real question that most people should ask themselves: Is it worth it? Thats right, is the PSP worth the money. Sony has officially launched only one package for the PSP in the US, and is is $250, and I am sure we all know what it does (and does not) come with. But its funny, the PSP only costs $180 in Japan…why so much more here in the US? Because Sony knows that your average un-informed consumer will buy it, and that happens to be a large amount of people. Why have I not jumped on the bandwagon yet you ask? Let me break it down. 1)Let my buy the system, not the system + some random junk I dont need. Do I need a 32MB memory stick? No, Sony just gives those away because they have 6 factories in Bangalor filled to the root with them, and they cant give them away fast enough. 2) Stop being proprietary. I dont want to buy a MS Duo Pro card…when I can buy the same thing called an SD card for half the price. 3) Give me writeable UMD’s. This makes it or breaks it. If they release UMD burners in the near future and they make the price of the media AND the writers reasonable, then it will sell through the roof. I can guartentee you that for every one person who is OK with purchasing a movie on UMD, that there are 10 more who are saying “I already own that, why buy it again”. I am one of those 10 people, and until I can write my own movies to UMD, this machine will not do what I need it too. For the record, I have played both the DS and the PSP. The DS is OK, but I do not think it matches up to the PSP, although it is much more reasonably priced. But for all those people who laugh at Nintendo, remember this. The DS was never meant to compete with the PSP. They are apples and oranges. Nintendo will watch Sony, the PSP sales, and the pro’s and con’s of the PSP, and they will build off of that. The next gen GBA (which will be the “official” device slated to compete with the PSP) will really give it a run for its money, cause you better believe that Nintendo will learn from Sony’s mistakes. And then the cycle starts over again, Sony learns from Nintendo’s mistakes, and on and on we go :)…..
heres a big question nobodys adressed, if they release a UMD burner how much is it going to cost? and another thing, if its graphix u want go play your computer. if you want to have a good system get a ds. plain and simple. and what if you dont want all the “metal gear solid” and “grand turismo” games? thats about the only 2 games iv heard of that are suposed to be decent for the PSP. and i agree with whoever said that “900$??!? FOR A MEMORY STICK?!?!?!? WTF ARE YOU THINKING. WE DONT WANT THAT! IF WE WANTED A 4gig MEMORY DEVICE WE’D GO BUY AN I-POD MINI FOR 200$! OMFG!”
MY GOD ALL OF YOU!!!. i bought a DS. and was happy with it. the battery life was great. i was enjoyed. i payed like 150 for it, and got warrio ware touched. it was fun for a while. then it sucked. they ran out of ideas. it was so lame. Wuuh huuu. you can now touch nintendo’s new system. and better yet you can BLOW IT! litterally. theres a microphone. but thats it. all i can see is YET ANOTHER DAMN REMAKE OF OCCARINA OF TIME on it. but with 64 graphics. the psp has better graphics. let alone. but graphics arent everything. HAVE YOU TRIED PLAYING A FPS ON THE DS? ITS ANNOYING. and someone earlier was all “oh the ds will have wifi multiplayer.” BUT ONLY IN SELECT CITIES YOU DOUSCHE FACE! DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE OPENING YOUR MOUTH! Look what happened to the gamecube. nintendo was all “oh look at our graphics, look at link, he’s so cool. but you know how long it took to actually MAKE a zelda game? a FN long time. freakin iddiots. they made a zelda game but the graphics and detail was flushed out the window when they went cell shaded… and the cells shading sucked. it wasn’t even anime style that all the zelda fans loved. and don’t even get me started on the zelda franchise. but the gamecube cameout around 2001… its 5 FN years later and a decent zelda game is comming out. and who has games for gamecube they play online? hmmm… lets see…. name 5. you can only name 2! ONLY 2!!! and they were the same game twice! (phantasy star, were looking at you!) The psp is a hacker’s paradise. the gig cards will go down in price in the future, shyt, you can get a 500 gig xternal hard drive for 450 dollars. its fn possible. i’m incredibly happy with the psp. the ds is cool to pick up chicks. but thats about it. wait… no… play the sampler disk that comes with the psp to pick up chicks. and What will come out on the DS? any good rpgs? i know all this because i’m Designing a game for the ds. its fn gay! the psp is harder to program on, but DUDES!!! look at the quality. look what it came with in the bundle. yeah sony’s tryin to be all ipodish, but come on mike! come on! its an mp4 player with a built in gamecube! (basically.) they already have movie ripping programs. you tell them how big your memory stick is, and how big you want your movie to be. (128 is smallest) and it makes pixles the screen size. and with mscracks.com you can easily get the serial key for it. lame as.ses! do your research. DON’T buy a DS, get a FN GbaSP. thats at least got good games on it. and the control scheme doesen’t require an analog stick. (DS, Where is your analog stick?!!) playing mario 64 for the ds is fn retarded! i say psp all the way. and for you little poor kids out there… GO GET A JOB! GO TO CLASS AND STOP PLAYING GAMES! fn morons.then one day you will have money. and that won’t be an issue. hell you might even be like me and make games for these shytty systems. email me PrivateDale@gmail.com if you wanna start shyt. bytches! you know i’m right.
Only select cities eh? Name your source, because from what I have read, its anywhere with a wifi hotspot. From your local starbucks to a wireless router. Similiar to the PSP.
This is an easy one, I would have thought easy enough for folks to see. The two machines aren’t competeing against each other… How can they when the price is so completely different. The DS is marketed to be a portable game machine and for the money does a decent job. For those of us that are in the PSP’s targeted demographic… 22 - 32 and have a few extra coins to spend, we will buy the PSP. The PSP’s screen is the best screen on the market, that’s not me talking it’s the market place talking. I am more than happy to pay more money for the outstanding 16:9 screen. If your not then that’s fine there is another fine choice… the DS. Either way happy gaming.
and quit fighting about the DS and the PSP… everyone has different tastes… that’s why there r two handheld systems out… so that you have a choice of which one is for u… but it does sukk for the psp gamers to have to pay for memory stikks that r 900 bux for a DECENT 4 gig… that’s really insane… 900 bux is like a months rent… if i had a choice… for a memory stikk or a place to live for a month… iono… hahaha… j/k…
i think YOU ARE ALL MORONS: Ok kids, its simpl. Do you remember when first CD-Rom Dive first came out. Assmonkeys…it cost $800 and how slow was it? It didn’t even have a -X on it. Was it worth the price of paying then????? Look how far CD-Rom Drive has come, you can buy a freaking 48X-CD for $30, lets not talk about RW’s yet. Let technology advance. Yes I am one of those who bough a 600 bps Modem for around $300 when it first came out. Then I remember buying the 1200 bps for $286 from COMP USA. How much can you buy a 56k for now days? Was technology betten then though with their price? YES IT WAS THE BEST AT ITS TIME. Think, so is SONY PSP. Its just like all the other types of hardrives that came out for pc, what would you buy, a MAXTOR 250GB OR A WESTERN 100GB, THEIR PRICE LETS SAY $300. If Western wasn’t a better hardrive then all your computers wouldn’t come with a cheap ass MAXTOR drive which disfunctions mostly at first sector, as i have noticed, the damn boot sector…guess what kids..FORMAT.COM. It is the same analogy with a Nitondo DS and Sony PSP. The difference is engineering is unproportional. Another analogy is, I can buy a Honda CIVIC and put all these money into it to make it fast. But honestly, can it even compare it Toyota Supra. You want someting good, you gotta pay, even when the good may seem bad because it is new. Give time for its advancement. So next time you all are one computer, remember, the computer you are using and learn its history before you all start comparing psp, a new born machine.
ok let me get this straight i want to sell my ds but im not sure if i should any suggestions please reply and also when will psp price go down to about 250
Unfortunatly hehehheheh, unless I am mistaken all, all those technologies you mentioned were and are not proprietary. All the technology dealing with the psp is a different story. If sony doesn’t open its doors, and allow the technology to develop, its just going to stagnate within sony itself, and prices most likely wont go down. I think that the psp had the potential to be the best handheld game system, but with all the restrictions of its proprietary technology, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. If I get a psp, I want to be able to watch all the video’s I already own on it, play media recorded on an unpropriatary medium, and be able to play all of my old playstation games on it (its got to have the capabilities, why it isn’t backwards compatable with old psx games is beyond me, its just stupid). All I’m hearing from sony is “I’ve got tis great portable gaming system, but you’ll play only the games I want you to play, use only the memory devices I give you, and I’ll make a ton of money off of you.”
Ummmmmm i’m really confused, but i think justcommenting is right along with the other people who said this the sony ppl need to release a umd butner at a reasonable price for anybody under the age of like 18 to get it i really hope that the price of the psp will drop so that you don’t have to be super rich to buy a psp
another thing if you really want 4 gigs of space you could just get 4 i gig cards for like half the price of the 4 gig card
if you think im crazy put like movies on one or two pics on like one or two and put your game saves on the little piece of crap that they give you wit the psp ( what else would you do wit that little mere 32mb come on i have a bigger sd card in my digital camera)
personally i think the ds games get a bit repetative after a while like within a 3 hour time frame
so what if the battery life sucks on the psp go to costco an get a fricken car usb and wall outlet charger with a psp and a game or movie (game or movie thing i’m not sure) for less than buying psp and a game and a movie
If you want a cheap way to put a full movie on ur psp without rebuying movies, use dvdShrink to convert your dvds to movie only and burn the image file at a shortened length of about a gig and a half onto ur computer and than use the psp image converter to compress to a size which will fit on ur psp memory stick
To dmgice , I got a 250 psp and 400 4 gb memory stick, not bad compared to your price.Psp owns the ds, maybe now they should change it to nintendo bs.
just to say a few things the PSP is way cooler then the DS, and if you wanna watch umd movies go on then buy it i think they are great but you don’t have to buy ones you already on DVD i mean how many times can you watch the same movie, i myself have bothe systems (one from parents and the other from relatives) but the ds is so repeatative and if you wanna know some cool stuff about the PSP go to http://www.psphacker.com/ of course if you actually like the DS then http://www.dshacker.com/ but compare the 2 pages see how much more you can do with a PSP then DS
Like Shermbot said, SONY is is just a name people believe to own the best in fine quality gaming: WRONGO. PSP games: suck, UMD Movie Quality: sucks, and the screen ain’t all that impressive, they just know there are people gullible enough to buy thier over-priced junk. We all know technology is better than this, they only use the UMD Disc technology because they know eventually, you’ll need to buy another one of thier over-priced “Memory Sticks”. SONY only hides behind thier reputation, and is really not in it for the people, but the people’s money, and most’ll rebuke that, but it’s true.
Seems like you like to use the “suck “language.
Come on,its time to grow up?
What suck technology are you talking?Try Pacifier technology ?
I can belive all this shit here
why, why, why, persist to protect an ilution NINTENDO is the worst fake in history

ds what is that maybe Nintendo Do Sucks
Are you an idiot? Nintendo HELPED Sony make the PLAY STATION you twit. Sony had nothing to do with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, especially because they had’nt even gotten into the Console biz ’till SEVERAL years AFTER the Snes. Nintendo was helping them develope the PS, that was, until Sony dropped ‘em at the last second. You don’t read much, do you? I suggest taking the time to ACTUALLY look into it, rather than fabricate your own story.
hey there bud - youre (mostly) right but still, chill out just a bit.
*oops - just saw what an ass this randan poser was. nevermind, eat him up haha! what a dumbass!
anyway - it was actually nintendo that dropped sony, but yes - everything else you said was accurate.
“S in SNES stands for Sony” ???? HAHA! this guy is many kinds of stupid! “sales rules”.. oh man, what kind of a schmuck is this guy. cant even speak english, and obviously went through years of some sony brainwashing camp. much like many other consumers, just looks like he spent a bit of overtime haha!
Super Famicom. Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Charlie is right and Dudikov mostly right.
Also, might I point out that the Nintendo DS has been the Number 1 selling unit (out of PS2, PSP, Xbox, GC, GBA, GBA SP, and DS) all June. It’s sold over 3 million units. The PSP is somewhere around 1 mill.
Whoopseh… Had only a few minutes to write that down. But anyway, Just for the note, Nintendo and Sony have always been at a crossroads, Sony has’nt ever outdone Nintendo. Oh, might as well put in a lil’ mention, FF7 is’nt really coming out for the PSP. The movie is.

yay! now all ppl need are umd burners, and we can put 1.8 gbs of whatever we want on our psps! lets see nintendo do sumthin like that with the ds.
