Sony, What Has Gotten Into You?

Sony Eats Lik-Sang

Sony is becoming an 800-pound-Gorilla-gone-sour. That, or they are making efforts towards worldwide humanitarianism. As we all now know, they want to protect all the Brits and the rest of our Euro-friends from the displeasures of owning a PSP system before it is actually available on Royal turf. They woultn’t want UK gamers exposed to the vulnerability of the PSP and how it is so susceptible to malicious hacks and mods that would enable it to do things like, I don’t know, um, play other games? Chat with friends online? Swap game saves? Watch movies? Listen to podcasts? Any of which are possible terrorist attacks on society.

So, for good measure, they are suing the likes of other companies, in other countries even, that intend on pushing this threat to the gaming society onto Royal soil. Companies like Lik-Sang, located not in the UK (therefore technically not an “importer”). No, Lik-Sang is founded and based in the free-trade-centric city of Hong Kong (which would make them a what? An “Exporter”?). No wonder Sony is so intent on stopping this crisis! Importers, err, Exporters like Lik-Sang have devised world-dominating strategies of placing harmful handheld gaming consoles on every continent, then with the push of one button, making each of the millions of units explode at once, causing the Earth to blow into a million pieces and make way for the Intergalactic Highway. Thank God Sony is on the lookout for the well-being of Earth’s citizens and controlling the illegal game-console-trafficking while preventing us from another bad book-to-movie reference. You see, Sony is doing all British gamers a service.

Here’s what is important. If any of the above pertains to you, please read the following press release carefully: Lik-Sang WILL still honor your pre-orders, regardless of Sony’s threats. (So, Mr. International Criminal, would you like that PSP in white or black?)

Hong Kong, August 8, 2005 - Lik-Sang.com, leading online retailer for videogame systems, games and cutting-edge gaming gear, was today informed that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc commenced legal actions against Lik-Sang.com in the High Court of Hong Kong for selling PSP consoles.

I should do my research before hand, not 10 minutes ago I placed an order for a white (oh, i’m a Apple fan boy, yes indeed) PSP from Lik-Sang, the order was based on 1. their funny name and 2. a read of their ToC’s made me feel comfortable.

Just to verify the situation (i.e. regarding your post / pre-orders of what is to be a super-big-seller(?)) I’ve e-mailed there support, witholding payment until I get answers. Maybe I should do some more Google-ing.

Does anyone know an alternative source of White PSP’s (reputable, eBay does not compute - Amazon can bugger off) in the UK.

I’d recommend waiting for a response from Lik-Sang. They’re good on their word. I’ve used them many times.

As for alternatives? I’m not sure. Have you tried Play-Asia or yesasia?

I told people sony was evil! Did they listen? No! Stick with Nintendo I say!

Lik-Sang is very reputable, and I bought my GBA Movie Player from them.

Oh, nice editing on Chobot’s picture. I still think it’s funny that IGN gave her a column of her own, JUST because of the hype surrounding the original picture. It’s funny though, because she’s incredibly.. not hip or up to date. I mean, seriously.. all of us good anime fans knew about Gravitation years ago. I wonder when she’ll discover Azumanga Diaoh, Fruits Basket, and Kodocha. Hehehe. I’m guessing that she’ll discover those by Christmas.. and maybe GANTZ, Elfen Lied, Sgt. Frog, Negima, and Kaleidostar in 2007. ha ha ha!

But I digress, Lik-Sang is a fantastic site and I would prefer that Sony stop trying to hurt them. Do you see Nintendo suing over the ability to buy a Red DS from Lik Sang? I think it eventually breaks down to the dumbest idea ever: Regional Coding. I hate Regional Coding. I collect anime, so I really do hate regional coding. It’s pointless, adds nothing to security, and confuses some consumers. Sony went with Regional Coding on their system for movies now (Games later), and they think that they can play that regional console bs on a portable. Portables are meant to travel and should -therefore- be region free.

The region free thing is why I throw my HD hat in with HD DVD. Because they’ve already said they will drop Regional Coding.

Sony should do us all a favor and DROP the stupid regional coding. Then they could make the systems faster, and reduce the price a little to improve sales.

Not that it matters what region your PSP is, the homebrew scene will excise and grind the stupid regional locks into a paste. So, why waste everyones time and emotions, Sony? Just take the stick out of your asses and go finish up Gran Tursimo for PSP. heh.

yeh sony are getting verry greedy.

were there is a will there is a way
you will always be able to get them from ebay.

Well maybe if Sony had released the PSP in Europe around the sametime they released it in the US, then i doubt Sony would have been in the situation where they have to waste time and money on legal actions.
Lets hope Sony learn from there mistakes and release the PS3 around the same time as the US and Japanese launch.

I just ordered a white PSP on eBay, only to find after having paid for the item that the item was pulled after a complaint from Sony.

It looks like Sony is trying to crack down on all “unapproved” imports/exports of PSPs into the UK.
