Spotting Consoles
Hey All,
This is kind of an open question back to the people who read portagame. How many of you actually see other people playing their PSP, DS, N-Gage, GBA, etc in public?
In the many months since these systems have been out I have only seen one person with a PSP. That was yesterday at the Atlanta International Airport. I almost got out the Treo 650 and took a secret photo (yes I know that’s creepy).
Anyway am I out of the loop? Where are you when you see the greatest number of portable consoles? At school? At college? Work? Do people only play at home? Or am I just too old to know people with portable consoles? Let us know what you think….

The only kid I have seen playing a PSP was about 7 years old and that was at work. We were stunned! $300 worth of hardware in the hands of a child! Geez. I am a waitress, and see many more kids in there with GBA SPs and lately even more NDS’s (kids don’t seem to use the stylus when I see them though).
Personally, I only play my NDS at home or in the car. I would play it on an airplane (that would keep me occupied for up to 10 hours!).
I was at Malaysia for vacation and I saw this one guy holding a PSP. My friend has a DS and I saw this guy playing his DS at my school. I see SPs ocasionally in malls and other places. N-gage, I’ve seen a few ppl playing on the MRT.

I’m ususally the one seen playing these things in public, typically too pre-occupied to notice if anyone else is playing. I have only seen one PSP in public, and that was on a plane. I also saw a Zodiac (Go Zod!) on a plane in what looked like some heavy solitaire action. I’ve seen several Nintendo DS systems in play, on planes and at the mall, and I hear they were popular at ComiCon. I have witnessed 0 N-gage systems in play, which is too bad as I hear PTG2 and Pocket Kingdom are dangerously addictive. All said, it would appear everyone is still playing their GBA SPs. I see these all over: At the bank, library, stores, airports, planes, restaurants, etc.
I usually try to peep at what games people are playing too, since I don’t care about privacy. One the PSP: Tiger Woods. On the Zodiac: Solitaire. On the NDS: MB64, Kirby, Zoo Keeper, and GBA games. On the SP: Most of the time its Mario or Zelda, but I’ve seen a few Pokemon and Advance Wars.
I saw a flame SP in use on 6th (NYC) and my brother has a PSP.
My wife’s DS and mine at a mexican restaurant sharing a table with my brother’s PSP might have been an uncommon sight.
My wife spotted a woman in my small apartment building playing a DS.
I see a lot of GBA SP playing kids in Wal-Marts, the lobbies of resturants, in airports last year I spotted three in the waiting area and five on the plane. I see a lot of handhelds. I know three people who own PSPs but they rarely take those out of their homes.
The Nintendo DS is the system of choice at the anime club as there are about a dozen people who own one and carry them with them. I have seen one PSP out at a mall, but on that same trip I saw three GBA SPs in the food court.
Something about living in the “South” (Missouri) seems to encourage the use of handhelds, maybe? Or maybe it’s because I can sense a portable unit a few blocks away. I have seen three NGage owners in the wild.
I think the GB Micro will be one of those units that we will see in the wild a lot. I printed out a mock-up of it that I got from a 4 Color Rebellion link, then put that together, weighted it down with some business cards, wrapped the thing in clear tape and have been using it to gauge reactions.
Most of the time people are like: “Woah. So the thing is made of metal, with plastic interchangable faceplates, it’s really that small.. and it’s ONLY $99?”
So far, it looks like price is not an issue with real people, just people on the internet who wallow in negativity and doubt.
I live in Australia and the PSP isnt out for another 4 days but i have already seen a person playing imported PSP at a mall. Loads of kids and nerds run around playin pokemon and mario n shit on their DS. I must have seen 20+ in public. SP’s seem to have vanished since the DS came out.
I live in NZ and I know 1 PSP owner (import) so unlikely to see those on the streets. Never seen a DS in the wild apart from mine, and seen about 1 Gameboy (Advance/SP) a year in the streets/buses/airports etc.
I’ve seen a few, I recall seeing some PSPs at Magic: the Gathering Nationals, and my DS. Hmm, I saw a few SP’s at the restaurant I waited at over the summer, and one or 2 DS. Also, obv there are handhelds at gaming stores. I introduced some guy to Meteos the other day via wireless…
I’m from Italy, and I saw like 4 months ago, a cute girl playing with a NDS at train station! another time I saw a guy playing a PSP on train, of course jap version coz It’s not out yet in europe… until today!
but I not gonna buy it, too expansive… like 250 euro! waiting for PSP-mini…
This is totally inspiring. I’m gonna start walking around with my DS in hand ore often now. (Everybody watch for an indian kid with his DS out!) Not more hiding in my backpack, safe from all the dust and rain. *Sigh*. I need to buy a screen cloth. Protectors are lame.
I still haven’t bought any games though. I’m still not sure what I want. I’ve had my DS since launch…
I’m thinking Nintendogs… or maybe meteos. Then again, there’s the new yu-gi-oh game, and being a fan of the TCG…
I’ve also seen quite a few kids in malls and in random stores with their SPs. Not many other DSs. Especially in a semi-small town like mine.
I’ve seen ONE guy with PSP. That’s it. Poor guy has absolutly nobody to play with… at all.
Good Point.
I’ve only seen one other person with a DS, and thats my friend at college. He’s the only person I can battle on SM64DS, Metroid, etc.
The DS sold more than a Million copies in a weekend in Europe alone. That means there has to be SOMEONE nearby that has one.
I think that once October comes around, and all the better games arrive, (It was a severely long break in the DS release schedule) things should start to pick up a bit more. Especially - hopefully - after Nintendogs shows its furry face. That should atract more of the “Other” gamers, and maybe the fans of the new slew of Tamagotchi Fans.
Meteos, (out next week on British soil) like Tetris beforehand, should bring in a lot of customers too.
As for PSP. It only came out 5 days ago, and the only perrson I know of who HAS one, is my brothers friend. But I haven’t seen it, not even in GAME.
Oh and as for the other consoles:
SP’s - A Friend. He also has a DS, but not seen him in a while. No others.
GBA - None.
N-Gage - Once. On a school trip, and it was kinda crap. That was the old one though. And yet again, a friend.
Well I was hanging out at a comic book store near me when someone whipped out a DS and started playing bomberman. It then became apparent that myself and 4 other people also had DS in their pockets and we had a 6 player bomberman rumble! Now we casually organize play every friday.
I bought one of the first PSPs in Osaka last year. Stood in line all night and have happily used it on my 1.5 hour train commute to watch all kinds of movies and listen to my tunes. Ive even dropped it a few times. Playing games on it in public? Not too intersted in that because it would annoy those around me. That said- I enjoy playing some games in the privacy of my home. On the train-Slap on the head phones and watching a movie is far more awesome than looking at the backs of peoples heads. Im 33.
I’ve seen one PSP at a Walmart held by some Asian kid who was listening to music on it. Other than that, I’ve only seen them in boxes.
I haven’t really noticed any DSes except for one a couple of days after they released here in the states. I had my DS and kid has his. Of course, I wanted to school him on some Metroid, but he didn’t want to play. Even his friends saw me and motioned for him to play a game or at least chat, but he sucked and shall forever be shamed.
Most of the time, as I would assume a lot of us here are the same, I’m the one who is seen playing my DS. Just the other day people where looking at me funny because I was playing Band Bros. on my way to class wearing headphones. I guess they thought I had some new fangled .mp3 player.

Hmm, I’ve seen quite a few kids playing GBA SP around at malls. But for the newer handhelds, its a rarer sight.
I’ve seen 2 ppl playing PSP in the “wild”, one was a man in his 30s playing in front of the sony store when it was first released. The other was at a family gathering, one of the kids had it.
As for DS, I know one the kids on my street has it because I saw him playing it once. And one time in calculus me and someone else in the class started playing smb64ds. Otherwise I haven’t really seen random ppl playing it even when I was at the airport when you’d assume you would see at least 1 person gaming.
Maybe now that the DS has some better games I’ll be able to find ppl at uni to play with.
