Touching the Web.

Clever readers have deduced -since the announcement of the Nintendo DS’ WiFi capabilities- that the Nintendo DS can be used to browse the internet. In a recent interview with online magazine Hobonichi: Shigeru Miyamoto backed up the speculation and stated that the DS can be used to surf the internet IF the following things are available.

1. An Internet Connected Wireless LAN. (Like one found in many users homes or at some internet cafes.)

2. A proper OS and Applications software.

Miyamoto did not state that Nintendo was planning to release such an OS/application in the future; but did say that Nintendo still wants to add more applications and features to the Nintendo DS if it does not interfere with the “suitable price for having fun.”

It appears that Nintendo is considering internet options a lot more seriously than they have previously let on. The interview, in its entire original form, can be found at this link.

First time trying out these new fangled blog engine things for posting news. Sorry that it isn’t really HUGE news. I would also like to apologize for how plain vanilla it looks. Well, I was going to make an image for it that had a Nintendo DS; but with Portagame.com in the top screen and my own site in the bottom screen; but I wasn’t sure on if I could get away with that. So, should I expect a rain of canned vegetables now?

No worries. Really nice story. It’s information like this that we love to see, images or no images, it’s the context that matters.

As far as wireless internet on the DS goes, Nintendo saying “it’s possible, but…” is classic Nintendo. They have the technology, but they don’t want to be the ones responsible for 10 year old kids walking around with porn,err,web-enabled handhelds.

I give it a few months tops before Majesco or Pelican has a web browser announced. ;-)
